Is it worth it? I want an AK style rifle, but I want to narrow down my ammo type. I've seen these before and I'm thinking about getting one of these in .223 so I only need to buy .223 instead of .223 and 7.62. Anyone have one or had any experience with it?

7.62X39, mainy for the ease of finding ammo and reloading, but it is also the best cartridge or that platform when you take into account range, accuracy and hitting power.

I'd prefer 5.45.Less recoil, better accuracy and better Penetration. Has better yaw affect when hitting soft tissue which creates a more devastating wound channel. The 5.45 does what the 5.56 was designed to do only better. Plus its still the cheapest ammo on the market... for now.

Mk19,just read your post. You might want to do a little more research on 7.62 vs 5.45. You are correct on 7.62 being more readily available though.

I'm probably wrong as I have no interest in these things, but I consider them to be short range guns and the 7.62X39 is a great short range cartridge, perfect match? If you want better range and accuracy then a AK platform can give you it would be best to choose something that isn't a AK platform.

All depends on his intended purpose for this rifle which I believe to be a combat rifle. An ak74 in 5.45 with quality ammo is capable of moa accuracy at 100m and shoots much flatter than the 7.62. quote:Originally posted by Mk 19

I did not know that a AK platform could shoot with any form of accuracy, I might have to do a little research on the 5.45, it could make for a fun Contender barrel

I've got a Saiga in 7.62 x 39 with a Russian AK Scope mounted via the side mount on the receiver.

It will shoot 1.5" groups at 100 yards, but the barrel is very light and does heat up quickly.

7.62 is a common inexpensive round. It does a excellent job and is widly used in many rifles. SKS, Saiga, AK, etc.

I dont put much credence in gel shot performance. It has little to do with actual bullet travel on real impacts. Each hit on animals and humans will choose its path based on skin, bone, muscle, etc.

Do your own research based on your application of this rifle. Then decide.

If it were my decision 7.62 is the winner overall.
