After too many years of getting boned for auto repairs I was pretty sure I could do myself, I signed up and took a two day vehicle maintenance / repair class at one of the local high schools.

Money darn well spent. Two six hour days, going over all the basics of car repair and maintenance, with the last three hours of the second day being spent on brakes.

It's amazing how much you can learn when you pay attention, ask questions, and have a great teacher. We disassembled and reassembled a whole bunch of wheels, learned a great deal, and had a lot of fun. I now consider myself versed enough that I am never again going to go to the shop for new brakes. Considering I recently spend $425 out the door for new pads and rotors for the rear of my F150, I am quite happy about that.
