no, if you read the article. the histrand brothers made a contract wiht the discovery channel to do a spin off called "hillstranded" they brothers (johnathon and andy) let the discovery channel crew shoot all the footage they needed but were not available for voice overs and other production work nessasary to turn raw footage into a series of shows they could air.
So, esentially, the hilstrands broke the contract and discovery channel has every right to SUE. let the courts decide.
the strange part about this is, ALL the other skippers quit too. that means, there won't be a "deadliest catch" this season (king cragging begins the middle of OCT.) unless, somehow, the discovery channel makes new arrangements with other boats in the fleet of crabbers. My prediction is, none of the other boats would do it but if they did, people would not be nearly as interested in the show because lets face it, watching people we know (or think we know) is alot more entertaining than watching a group of unknowns face the same weather and boat mishaps we have been watching the past 6 seasons. without the personalities on these boats, the show is DOA.
SO if I were discovery Channel, I would make a deal with the hillstrands to finish the work when they have time (and ambition) and drop the suit so that the series can continue.
Sig and the others could easily sell their personalities to any number of networks (I bet Sig is popular enough to be on dancing with the stars)

foolish they broke the contract, that was FREE MONEY. They were crabbing anyway, why not get paid a TON to be on camera.
it is a royal pain in the butt to have those Camera crews along. You have to make provisions for them, do things you wouldn't normally do to make it exciting for TV and have those cameras in your face 24-7. It seems like an easy thing to do but you gotta remember, discovery channel is making millions off these guys personal lives too.
What you see on TV is just part of it. they have to travel all over the country to do personal appearances and autograph signings as well. Some appearances are to promote the show and some to promote the sponsors.
Fishermen, especially these guys, are away from home 6 months out of the year as it is. The reality is, it's a huge strain on their families for a small payback.
I wonder if they'll go back to the earlier ships to make their show? I didn't care for Jonathan. I did think that fight with the other skipper was staged but funny. Now I suppose "Crab Wars" with him and other dude would be cool. Jacking up each others gears and launching that stinky butter at each other would be a good show.
Or this is just a ploy to guage the market. I mean since the skipper of Cornilia Marie ain't with us any more. But their spin off would be Jake in celebrity rehab.

renegotiate to make it worth their while[;)] If being home were a bid deal during off time, I just wouldn't have signed the contract until the endless traveling part was taken out.
bout time. that show had pretty much run its course.
really, how many times can you watch the same thing. setting gear. hauling gear. big pots, small pots, empty pots. bad weather. mechanical failures. ritualistic abuse of the rooks. psychological meltdowns.
every episode is pretty much the same. dont get me wrong. it was a cool show for a few seasons, but its gotten very much repetitive. at this point, we've pretty much seen just about everything they have to offer. better to go out on top than to ride it into the ground.
plus, its not really very realistic. ive worked with a few bering sea crabbers and every time the show is brought up, they laugh at how pathetic it is.
Like many things, the first year was entertaining, interesting, and informative. The last few seasons have been full of drama, petty bickering and playing to the cameras.
It had become 'The Real Crab Fishermen of Dutch Harbor', and should have aired on E!.

So those motorcycle-build programs on Discovery are all FAKE ?????
They're really nice guys that go home to do some knittin' with grandma?
I liked the show for a while, but it has reached the point where all the new shows are reruns of the old shows, so I've lost interest. TV shows come and TV shows go.
I'd have to see the contract to know which side I agree with on the law suit.
Discovery channel screwed the pooch. Instead of working around the Hilstrand brothers' schedules they tried to force them to make time to do their show. When they refused to sacrifice what little time they had with their families discovery channel sued. Now none of the captains will deal with the discovery channel because they are suing one of their own. Discovery channel caused the new show and deadliest catch to be dead in the water with their stupidity.
