There is a reason it's called the Graveyard of Empires.

Sounds like Trump wants to take the gloves off. We'll kill more of them, and maybe lose fewer of our own...but the end result will be the same.

Didn't agree with Trump, but what do I know? Wait and see.

Says terrorists can't be given a place to PLOT against the U.S. in safety. Well why are we letting millions into the U.S. The U.S. is as safe as it gets, for terrorists. Masks and burkas no problem.

If we pull out it will be just like Iraq and Syria.

I was there twice and I thought we had never committed enough soldiers to win the fight.

We have tried and tried to build an Afghan army but they suck.

I think its the right thing to do. Set a goal and make it happen. If we could get Pakistan to stop helping them it would be a lot more easy to really crush the Taliban.

CAN we win, Sam? No other country, that I am aware of, has been able to win there.

Serious question....not trolling. I am an Army retiree, also.

I doubt it but I think we can decimate their numbers enough to make them ineffective.

I am not Trump fanboy but IMO he has surrounded himself with pretty good advisors.

I say give them a shot if it fails keep a small force forward deployed like we should have in Iraq. Keep a Bde Combat team with Aviation assets and let them train and hit targets of opportunity.

If we had a Combat team in Iraq when ISIL first started all this crap we could have held them off.

Maybe a Inf Bn, Armored BN and a Armored Inf Bn with air and artillery would have hammered ISIL.

But we pulled out and let ISIL invade. This cost many deaths and misery.

The Soviets, with all their brutality, gave up on trying to win and left. What does that tell us?

So we keep a brigade there.....permanently?

    Yes

Rotate units in and out but keep the equipment there.

In Iraq they could have kept a few of the bases going and use them for training and COIN operations.

Camp Speicher would have been a good pick. Out of the way and centrally located.

Al Asad Airbase would be good choice too or the base at Al Q.

The forces would be of a different make up in Iraq I would go more Armor/Wheeled in Afghanistan I would go with more Air Assault forces.

Use the unit to train the national army and do COIN missions. Keep them off balance.

We are not trying to have an Empire we are keeping terrorists engaged and off balance.

Not nearly a reasonable comparison. The Soviets suffered nearly 50,000 casualties (13,481 dead, 35K wounded) over 8.5 years fighting a war against an entire country. The US has had approximately 14500 casualties (2200 dead, 12309 wounded) over 16 years of combat operations fighting a terrorist organization, with the support of many parts of the country. The US has been far more successful, even with the handicapping of 8 years of ridiculous ROEs. The technology and war capacity is so much better today, as well as medical technology. The political climate as well is different. Terrorism is not going to stop just because we aren't there, and I'd rather our soldiers kill them over there then have to fight them here. Give the US soldier reasonable ROEs and watch them destroy the Taliban and their leadership.

Fix the Veteran's Hospital before sending more of our youth to death, dismemberment, and disfigurement. One solution would be to disband the failed and grossly negligent hospital and all of its administration. Let veterans go to any specialist or hospital of their choice. But, back on topic, don't send ANY more of our youth until we have adequate services in place to take care of them when they come home.

Honestly the only way to win there is to turn it to glass. Not trying to sound evil...just the fact.
