Guy here at work tells me that in Fla. when you are shark fishing, once a shark is brought onboard the boat, that the charter Capt. pulls out a .45 ACP and shoots the fish in the head while it is laying on the deck of the boat.

I said BS! From 2 foot away you will get a pass through the sharks head and put a hole in the boat. So let's hear it, what do you all have to say?

Well from my personal experience with swordfish, a .357 while they are still in the water is better, and yes they pass right through the fish.

    Never heard that one before.

I do know that if you go halibut fishing in Alaska, they have a shotgun on board in case you hook into an extremely large halibut and it gets out of hand well you bringing him onboard.[:D]

In the Queen Charlotte's we just nip the gills with a knife after
harpooning them. They bleed out real quick. No need to shoot them.

Thats just a story he tells with his guns on board. Now all the guns are sitting on the bottom of the ocean with his boat.

Yeah... No. My brother in law charters, and we have caught many a shark, no guns on the boat.. Last time we caught sharks we just clubbed them death with an aluminum bat. I don't know if this is normal procedure, it's just what we do, and it works for us.. Same with Halibut, we went to Alaska for a family reunion (Father in law's wife's family) chartered a fishing trip and caught a lot of Halibut. The Capt. had a club on board and when we hauled one in he clubbed the hell out of it (dead) so it wouldn't slam around and break legs.

When I first got my boat in Florida, I caught a little shark. He tried to eat me.

    I put 3 into him from a 2" .38.

Yup - 3 holes in the hull.

    Really pissed me off.

    Brand new boat.

Use caution, the shark might have ingested a magnesium bar and the gunshot would likely set it off and burn a hole through the bottom of the boat...

Total BS. They do however have short shark bats most boats carry.

We pull the fishes head up wth a gaff hook. put the muzzle od a single shot 12 ga right against their head and pull the trigger. it puts a 7/8 inch hole right thru. some guys are good at it some not a halibuts brain is the size of a pea if you miss they react poorly even when you hit it perfectly, they flop around for hours. I don't think they need their pea brain to live. Nancy Pelosi is like that

shoot them? no! just put a sharp knife to the back of their head, when they feel it they will roll over and cut their own head off, then you do the same to the tail and put the body on ice...you got to cut them to get rid of the ammonia...it`s nasty to eat them if they`re full of ammonia[xx(]

Does the captain have to use a 45 or can he substitute a 9 mil or 38?

Did you ask him if his boat was made out of concrete like the ones made during the steel shortages of WWI and WWII?

Remember in the movie "Perfect Storm" when George Clooney shot the shark with the shotgun? That was a badass boat. Awesome movie too.

First, noone intentionally goes shark fishing. They don't fight like other fish, they're kind of dumb and lazy once you've got em' on.

Believe it or not, his exact words were that the law in Fla. mandates that it be a .45. Then repeated "it's the law" that's when I couldn't take it anymore and called bull poop. [:D]
