Question for trucker or bus drivers

Every once in awhile, I see some little tabs on the lug nuts. They are little triangles going from the lug nut to a point. They all point the same direction.

What are they for?

Drove a truck for 30 years and I have no idea unless they
are lug nut covers. Lug nut covers are either chrome metal
or plastic with some kind of chrome finish. Strictly for looks.
They come in all kinds of shapes and styles.

I believe They are to tell You what side of the Vehicle the Lug Nuts go on.
On the old Dayton style Wheels it didn't matter what side the Lug Nut was on, But the Budd style Wheels the Lug Nuts are directional and if You put one on the wrong side They will come loose.
The only other thing I can think of is They are Locks to prevent Theft.

Now don't hold me to this, but I think it's got to do with which side as e3mrk said. The passenger side is standard thread. The drivers side is reverse thread. Or vice versa.

If they're directional, how can you put them on the wrong side? [;)]

Close guys but not quite. They are for inspection of the lug nuts when doing your pre-trip inspection. They point them all the same way so that at a glance if you see one out of place you know that this particular lug nut is loose. You are however right that some trucks, and trailers have lug nuts that are threaded the oppisite direction for the side of vehicle they are on. It is still very common on front-load redi-mix trucks.

It lets you know by sight if you have a lug nut loosening up.

    The man's got a point!

Being a machinist, I know for a fact that a standard thread nut will not go on a left-handed stud. Try as you might, it's a no go.

They all point in the same direction to tell you if the lug nuts are coming loose. All our DPW vehicles have them as well
