Do you work for a company or are you an owner/operator? Iregardless: Remember back before the govt got a case of stupid and diesel prices were (always) less than gasoline. How much would you estimate the cost of a given trip with a given load increased? And who ultimatly gets the shaft on the prices?
Id wager its whoever is the last down the line buying whatever the goods are.
I post this cause I heard someone talking about prices of food- and I figure if it costs twice as much to transport it here and then there then there... Transport companies aint just gunna eat the profit loss.

Do you or anyone you know of have a use for a 16" (I think it's a Makita) circular saw? A man that said he used to build log cabins sold it to a friend of mine at his pawn shop. I think it's like $169. I thought about you when I saw it. It's freakin' huge.

Awhile back we were discussing wood. You said you had never had the pleasure of splitting any American white elm.

Here is a few pics of "splitting" American elm.

    007-1.jpg

    004-1.jpg

And here is how you split this stuff that I swear is made with steel cable:

    008-1.jpg

As you can see, elm doesn't so much "split" as much as you cut through it with the hydrolic splitter. [;)]

Do you ever get over into Fla.?
I am right off of I-75 at exit 321 if you ever get over this way and want a home cooked meal. There is a Sprit truck stop at the exit you could park your rig in and I could pick you up. Just a open invite if you ever get over this way.

Allen, a couple of questions: Do you ever travel I-55 N in MS? I only live a few miles from the Tillatoba MS truck stop. Would be happy to share a cup anytime you come thru.

2nd ?: I have an Allen Griggs in my files as tanning deer hides from Sebring tanning in Florida. Could that be you??

I sent a PM but it bounced back as undelivered.

I suppose my PM address is good but if it will not go thru, please email me at: tccox1224@yahoo.com

    Best, Tom

Hardy, David L. Sr. A review of first aid measures for pit viper bite in North America with an appraisal of extractor suction and stun gun electro shock. Published in Biology of the Pit Vipers, Edited by Johnathan A. Campbell and Edmund D. Brodie, Jr., Selva, 1992.

I should have remembered this, as I was at the symposium it is published from. The bibliography of this paper contains an extensive listing of the papers published on electo shock treatments of snake bite up to that time. Little has been done since as far as I know because the medical world considers the issue settled. This volume should be available in a university library if you have access to one. I have neither the time nor inclination to type out the bibliography to post here, but I would be happy to send you a photo copy of the paper and bibliography.

When you were a Paramedic, did you ever do anything that was potentially capable of injuring a kidney?

I have a feeling that if I end up donating one to my friend Jack, it will end my hopes of ever getting into Law Enforcement, and since I'm going to school in the fall to be an EMT anyway, I'm wondering if I'd still be safe in that field post-donation.

hey, I noticed you work as a professional trucker, was wondering if you could shed some light on something I've seen on the road recently.

A good portion of trucks I see on the highway have what can best be described as "side skirts" on the middle of the trailer. Is this to reduce the air resistance somehow?
my only other hypothesis is that they are there to keep stupid kids from trying the "Fast and the Furious" thing where they little sports car goes under the semi trailer...

I am a company driver, so I don't even look at the price of fuel. The company sends me fuel assignments on my various runs, and I just stop at those truck stops and fill 'er up.

Tough deal on the owner operators the way diesel prices fluctuate.

Most owner operators get a fuel surcharge that varies with the price of fuel. When fuel goes up, the surcharge goes up. It's a big deal out here in the northwest with the log truckers, goes up and down every week.
In the end, the consumer pays for higher fuel cost, whether it's eggs, beer, a 2x4 or the screen you are looking at, it's all hauled by a truck at one time or another. High fuel, higher prices.

Yeah, he fills 'er up alright, with coffee and hashbrowns and eggs.[}:)]

Some day, he's gonna stop here, and I am gonna buy the coffee and hash browns and eggs. Mebbe a waffle too.[^]

My freight cost to the west coast have doubled in the last few years..2000lb minimum from Port Arthur to Seattle, cost 26 cents per lb plus a 40% sur charge.... .26x 2000 = $520 + 40% =$728.00 which increases cost to .36 cents which is added to the cost of the product. This may not seem like a high rate, but the increase has cost me volume sales...Unless we get relief from fuel costs,I see another recession in the future plus inflation....[:(]

pretty damn sad aint it. Diesel is what drives America. Some would rather drive the costs up just send it overseas and advance their hybrid agenda.

It is about as balanced a view as I have seen. He makes a point in the trial of Reno, that I had never considered before.

The really fun part of the cost of fuel is the initial costs.

Here are a couple of examples. Keep in mind that I don't know the actual costs or what my company charges I just know what I make.

1st example: In the past there has been diesel at the tank farm in Las Vegas. The cost however was such that it was actually cheaper to load it in Tucson, AZ and drive it up to Vegas to be delivered, than to actually load it in Vegas and deliver it locally.

2nd (my company does this run approx once a month): Because aviation gasoline has lead in it it can't be run through the pipeline and has to be shipped in on rail cars where it is offloaded into tanks and then a sample is sent to lab to make sure that it is up to specs. This stuff is made somewhere around L.A., but we load it up here is Phoenix and deliver it to Corona (somewhere s.e. of L.A.) and a couple of other airports in the vicinity, and another one down in Ramona, CA just outside of San Diego.

These runs can't be done in a day so in addition to what I get paid they also give me a per diem for the day that I don't come home and pay for a hotel for me to stay in.

Like I said I don't know the inner workings of this stuff but we run on average 8800 gallons of gas and 7600 gallons of diesel and these runs pay me right around $350. That has to be a hell of a price difference.
