Can anyone tell me what a Banded(Bonded?) Transmission is, and how it differs from a regular auto trans.

Your going to need a transmission specialists for this one. I believe Doug Wilson has a good transmission link.

I can find out for you, if no one answers. I know a few.

The reason I want to know is....

Someone I know has a older blazer that had been converted to a auto trans. Supposedly it is a pretty strong auto trans. I drove it a few times, and whenever you put it in drive or reverse you could hear and feel it shift. I mean, way more than you (or I least what I have experienced with auto transmissions) would expect. Anyway, to night it started to have problems, wouldnt go faster than about 35 mph (the rpms dont go higher either). I told them about the noises I had heard previously and was told that it was a banded (or bonded) tranny and thats how it supposed to be.

I would say that someone has added a shift kit to the transmision valve body which is not a bad thing it just gives you more positive shifts. You should be able to feel the tranny shift as it goes from 1st to 2nd to 3rd gear. If you are hearing a clunk when you shift into drive or reverse that is something different altogether. Could be something as simple as worn U- joints or something internal in the tranny. But not being able to go above 35 MPH is not so good. I have never heard or read of a bonded or banded transmision.

I never have heard of either a banded or bonded transmission.

All modern automatic transmissions have clutch BANDS within them to engage the various gear ratios.

One modern exception is the "Continuously Variable Transmission", which uses different technology.

This is the wrong place, I think , to trouble shoot your problem.

Drive it/tow it to a dealer or tranny shop.

    Good luck.

If the rpms do not increase on the enginge i would say the tranny is ok. When the tranny shifts hard thats a good thing it will last longer because there is less wear. I think you have an engine problem. If the rpms pick up and the car does not go then you might have a tranny problem. If when you put it in gear then you hear a clunking noise then you probaly have a u joint problem. Most if not all automatic transmissions have bands. Dont know much about imports. Hope this helps.

I was thinkin something along the lines of the old Chrysler 'semi automatic' fluid drive.

It doesnt make any unusual sounds when shifting through gears. Just when go from park to drive, park to reverse, etc...
