I bought a Colt Officers Model .38 made 1941. The butt is marked LAC 86. I am thinking Los Angeles County, anyone have any ideas?

Well, nobody. I made it up.

This was only to serve the point that LAC 86 could be or mean anything.

True, but I thought someone may have information on LA County Sheriff firearms. There are collectors of police marked firearms. But thanks for your input.

More likely they would be marked LASO.

That is what I thought. But it is hand stamped, and stamping one less letter a couple hundred times may have been an incentive. Plus at the time they may have been considered county property instead of SO property. I found a number for their museum and will give them a call.

LASO is Los Angeles Sheriff's Office.

Most police agency markings have a clue, like PD, SO, HP etc. LAC is most likely to be a security company or maybe some government agency with security guards. I once had a Colt stamped for the TVA (TN Valley Authority) issued to a security guard at the facility.

Strange that they would call California State Prison Los Angeles County "LAC". Seems like you are leaving off some important letters. This facility was opened in 1993, so that's not it. Thanks for checking though, I will do some research tomorrow.

Don't disallow the LAC prison from your quest because it was opened in 1993. I know of prisons that STILL have M1 carbines and colt .357 troopers in their lockers.
Back in 1993 many "second line" LEO agencies still used the revolvers.
Best of luck in your quest.
