Not on a 6 shot, but I have on a 7 shot. On the swing arm does it say 686-M or just 686?

Hmm...I own a 686. The "-M" was added due to a recall. However, you appear to have a custom piece. I am unsure if the recall problems were fixed with the "-3" code. Sorry, wish I could help. However, I will say, you now own the finest revolver ever made, and as we both know a revolver is far superior to an auto...so I would say you probably own the finest handgun ever made.

my best WAG is it is called a Classic Hunter, 686-3, product code 104249. That had an unfluted cylinder from the factory, but according to the "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 2nd Edition" it came with Houge Combat grips, although it's be no prob to change to the wooden grips your gun has now.

    GO FOR IT

Never knew a revolver was far superior to an autoloader. Guess you learn something new everyday

I've get a 629 round-butt, 2.5" bbl., with an unfluted cylinder. My first one. They kinda grow on ya. [;)]

If Jesus returned tomorrow, his firearm of choice for CCW would be a S&W revolver....

He told ya that himself did he? [:X]

The reason I ask, is that he told me a few years ago, that he doesn't go anywhere w/o his HK MP5 PDW.

Just one of the reasons I bought one....[;)]

    Jesus would carry a M1911A1

"we both know a revolver is far superior to an auto..."

Unless you have 8 bad guys to deal with. Whereupon almost any semi-auto will do.[8D]

If you have 8 guys you need to shoot, and you're a civilian, you need to be your * elsewhere.

I have had a total of 7 Smiths (including a 29 I'm getting from Kasey), with unfluted cylinders. I am pretty sure they were all Lew Horton Specials. All were N Frames.

Not a fan of L frames, but I can understand why some would be.

686 Hunter. I have one just like it. The grips are worth some money as well. Not a bad price and a great gun.

Looks like the one I lost in the boating accident. Nice gun, nice price. If you don't want it I'll take it.
