I received this bayonet from my father many years ago. It has no sentimental value or monetary value to me at all. It was something he got while he owned his gun store. I am in the process of cleaning it up and wanted to know what it goes to and any history of it. It is not cut down or anything. Also, I wanted to give it to a forum member I have already chosen. Should I replace the handles or not??? They are cracked and falling apart. I don't know how to make new ones, but might give it a try or get someone to make them for me. It is going to someones grand child on here. Oakie. PS, I am tired of trying to get these pictures to turn right side up[}:)][}:)] I don't care which way I hold the phone, the pictures always come upside down and i tried to change them in the photo bucket, but they turn around again. Screw it. You get what you see[;)] Also, how do I polish the metal???? I want it to look a little better even if I have to send it out. It is important to me.

RIA=Rock Island Armory. I am no expert on these things, but it had to be for a '03 Springfield. No Idea as to value. If you do decide to re-do the handles, I have some decent Mahogany I would be willing to donate to the project.

not much in the way of help Oakie .

I have one similar I bought off a neighbor kid when I was 13 maybe 14 years old . I gave 6.00 for it .. just because I liked it and had never seen one before , I sanded the blade and shot the whole thing with clear coat [:D][:I]
still have it some where .. If I remember I think some previous owner bobed ( cut the length back ) a few inches though.

1903 Springfied bayonet. probably the best example of "the finest battlefield implement ever devised". iirc at that time long bayonets were the fad. they made them long at first, then as it went out of vogue, decided it was too frikkin long and cut them down.

you might call it a collector's item, or a novelty. but they aren't rare. do whatever you want to it. get rid of the rust with fine steel wool and Rust-B-Gone. you don't want to leave a rotten handle on it.

Okay, will do. I am not good at the cuts that need to be made. I took them off tonight and they are really bad. When I get it all done, I will send it to the forum member. It will be from both of us.Oakie
