Dropped Dads Garand off at Jeff Lee's yesterday for new wood and parkerizing. Said it would be a week or two. Got a call around 1p saying it was done! Gun looks good as new, top notch job at a great price.
If you are in the DFW area and you are not aware of Jeff Lee, it would be wise to find him and stop by. He is the ultimate gunsmith parts supplier in the area.

The wood was $200, which included all wood, hand stained with the proper stain, minor fitting and all labor.

Allen: Haha. I have no idea why photobucket inverts my pics and I am frankly too busy and too lazy to fix them.
RSCOLE: Sorry, no history. It's a CMP gun got it for $495 couple years back. I bought it for my Dad because he's is the greatest. He collects military rifles and didn't have one. So I figured he needed one. I think all the metal is SA except the wood, which at the moment appears to be winchester. The original wood is awaiting an expert opinion and a valuation to see if I keep it or sell it. He also mentioned somethig about it could have HRA parts, I think is what he said. I dunno about all that stuff. I just like the gun and I am ready to do another.
I am going to try and meet a guy who will do the cartouches for me. hopefully this week. I am excited to get this back to Dad! Yesterday was my Bday and he gets the gift!
Nice thing to do for your father![:)]
My biggest disappointment was the throat gauged a 2.5. That was a little bit of let down. I think 3 is considered junk...
Still a shooter.
You can always replace the barrel later if you want to.

I believe that would be incorrect. The CMP sells what they call their rack grade and the direct quote is, "Bores will be generally good with only minor imperfections; the barrel crown may be nicked, and the muzzle may gauge more than "3" on muzzle gauge. The Throat Erosion will gauge more than "5"."
I think you have at least a couple thousand rounds left in that barrel.
BTW - very nice rifle! [:p] Your father should be proud.
Muzzle Wear is more important.
A nice rebuild, he gave you a break on the price.

I believe the throat and muzzle measurements are figured at around 1000 rounds per (muzzle measuring 3.5 = 3500 rounds fired, 10 =smoothbore, etc.), so there is plenty of life left in it.
With a serial # in the 5 million range, I doubt this gun ever did anything more than a trainer. I am willing to bet it was never used in ww2 and the odds of Korea are pretty slim.
Freaking cool what the AP rounds do to those chevy hubs and calipers.[:p][:D][^]
I can't believe he did that in a day. Looks great.
I know.
He said they got started on it before I had left, worked late and finished it this morning.
