    So some years ago I took work aboard a US research ship. Spent eight months doing it. One of the early mysteries was the signs by the toilets:

    Put paper towels in the waste basket.
    Only toilet paper goes in the toilet.

    You'd think it would stop there, but the sign continued...

    Use toilet paper for "Wiping".
    Use paper towels for hand drying.


    Had to ask about that and the Captain explained they had a Chinese scientist aboard once who used paper towels for "wiping" ... placing them in the waste basket.

    Thus the signs became a bit more "explicit".
