On 7 July 1916, British army Sgt. Thomas Kitching was seriously wounded and lost his left leg at the Battle of the Somme during WWI.

While recovering Kitching crafted a brooch for his fiance from a piece of his thigh bone.

This piece is on display at the University of Leeds.
