Here is a cut n paste from an AP story.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a Philadelphia postman 48-year-old Patrick D'Ambrosio
didn't deliver 22,000 pieces of mail that were later found at his home
The charge is a misdemeanor carrying up to six months in prison and a fine.
Did a google search and it's surprising how often postal employees are caught doing this.
One has to wonder how many are doing it that don't get caught.
Time to make this a felony and start handing out some hard time for people caught doing this.

The USPS is the greatest affirmative action racket going.
Just because they give veterans preferred status does not mean it is a racket.

You or I get caught stealing mail, it's a felony and if convicted of mail theft face a fine of up to $250,000 and up to five years in federal prison.
Why should postal workers be treated any differently?
Mail theft is mail theft.
As far as Congressional meddling being part of the problem, can you name me one single issue that Congress has been involved in that they didn't "screw the pooch" one way or another.
The postal service has over 617,000 employees so it's a given that a certain number of them will be law breakers no matter how many workers they have out delivering the mail.

that would explain a lot.

Is it possible they hire Veterans in OTHER cities/towns besides yours?

The last numbers I have show the percentage of black employees at 27%. That makes it an AA racket if ever there was one.

maybe they do. I wouldn't know.

Theft of mail by a postal employee is a felony, but there's also an offense under US Code titled 'Desertion of Mails'. That's the charge when a postal employee just dumps or destroys mail,
There's also a charge of 'Theft Of Mail Matter By Officer or Employee'. This involves one of their employees taking mail for personal gain.
Desertion of mails is a misdemeanor, but theft of it is a felony.
This doesn't really make sense to me either. The victim impact is equivalent so the seriousness of offense/punishment should be, too.
Later on one Friday in July I just hung around the Post Office after work. The supervisor was giving me the fish eye as everyone did not let the door hit them in the posterior as they left work. One carrier, me and the supervisor were the only ones left. I already knew the other carrier used up all his vacation time but I asked him anyway. After he responded "no vacation left" I turned to the supervisor and said I want to bid on the open vacation time. He responded there is no open vacation time. I reminded him about the guy getting fired for mail theft and his two weeks that he would not be using was open. I enjoyed that vacation[8D].

Agree 100%, my carrier can't even read 3" white letters and numbers on my black mailbox [:(!], sometimes she doesn't even know the road she's on.........I suppose the job is mainly guess work now [:D]

Looks like that cat got away with it long enough to collect 22K pieces of mail...Wonder how long that took?
They need to make his lazy * go out and deliver every bit of it ON HIS OWN TIME!! Then LOCK'EEM UP!!
The best path for promotion or a more sedentary job within USPS would be to get fired.
Then the perp would be rewarded with a lengthy paid vacation called administrative leave, the union would have him reinstated along with a more favorable job. Possible promotion and pay raise warranted for their troubles.
I think that they have shown that independent agency status doesn't work. It's time to put USPS back with the rest of the federal employees. Same pay schedule, same leave, same vacation, & same health benefits. And, same ability to be fired for the same transgressions, or RIF'd when jobs are eliminated.

It's been my experience that most governmental agencies practice double standards...
