Eldest son was driving home this evening and got within about a mile of the house...
Deer jumped from left side of two lane road to the right front quarter panel of his KIA.
He was coming down a long hill at ~45-50 and had zero time to react.

He said he barely felt the impact... But thought he'd better stop and take a look.
When he got here, we went back with the DODGE and picked up the dead deer... ~110 lbs DEAD Weight

Strike up one for the KIA...

My wife got her first buck 45 days ago with her Jeep Grand cherokee, totaled the Jeep and they will prosecute here (so we were told) for taking road kill.
Strangely it took a week to get a crew out to look at where our road was sliding down the hill side after a storm but they picked up Bambi in less than 30 minutes after we reported it.

My wife has hunted deer with 3 different cars in the last 10 years. She's bagged a fawn, a doe and a 6 point buck in that order.

Taking a road kill deer or any animal is illegal in PA but if you want the deer it's easy to get a permit which costs nothing by calling an office. If you don't call for the permit it gets real expensive quick.

I have never understood whether it was meant to be an acronym or just a name. Neither have I had the desire to investigate it.

Some states you are not even lawful to dispatch a suffering deer after you hit it should it still be alive.

Taking roadkill is illegal here in CO too, so is putting a wounded animal out of its misery. In fact, I even know a guy who got charged with a felony (later reduced on a plea agreement) for killing a large bull elk that was stuck inside a truck and mortally wounded. Also inside the truck was a mom and 6 year old girl. The animal was flailing around and terrorizing them to the point they were in extreme danger and were scared to death. No game officials or LEO's around (took them 45+ minutes to show up).

Charge: Unlawful Euthanasia of a Wild Animal; Class 4 Felony.

Plead guilty to some high misdemeanor; $5,000 fine, community service, loss of firearm and loss of hunting privileges for 5 years (plus about $15,000 in legal fees).

So much for trying to help someone! [:(!]

seems like he'd have been better off taking that to the court room.

Well got word from the processor that about a third of the meat was unusable due to impact damage...
He asked if I still wanted him to complete the processing or discard the animal completely.
I'm not one for wanton waste, so... 65% is better than NO%...

Get-Ur-Dun... and I'll pick it up next week. BTW...
He's gonna let it hang several extra days to try and age the venison a bit more.

Luckily for me... NC hunt tags have two "Hunters Choice" spots for either Doe or Buck...
And I rarely fill my hunt tags 100%... So I'm good for the season still. [;)]

Around here you can dispatch an injured animal without fear. Might not be 'legal' but nobody has ever been fined or prosecuted to my knowledge.

I have never hit a deer myself, as I use one of them thar whistles when I am likely to see them on the side of the road. I also honk my horn every minute or so when driving down the most dangerous patch in my area for deer in the fall/winter late at night.

We looked under the hood yesterday.
The radiator was spared... But the AC coil is doubled at the latch clip...
And the left corner of the unibody frame looks bent to me.
Otherwise, it's what you see in the pics.

As soon as he gets the adjustment, I'll let you know the total...
I just hope it doesn't take eight plus weeks to get it back this time.

He had hail damage spring of 2011 and it literally two months or more to get it back...

In Georgia not only is it legal to pick up road kill, but DNR is happy if you do so.

Those rules against it up in Yankee land are really stupid.

And "unlawful euthanasia of a wild animal?" What a bunch of BS!

I hit a big 8 point buck on I 10 in Texas last year in the big rig, and went to the next exit, then came back and found him laying in the grass 30 feet from the interstate. His hips were broken but he was conscious.
He was trying to rise on his front legs but couldn't.

It was pitiful. Fearing some bs laws to the contrary I immediately killed him with my Buck knife.

While I understand that some folks might use the premise of dispatching an injured game animal to justify simply killing something, I don't follow that policy.
There are times you just need to do what you feel is right regardless of the legalities. Over the years that I drove 85 miles per day to work, I found and dispatched numerous deer that had been injured by vehicles. Didn't report them and didn't tell the bunny cop. On the other hand, I also found and rescued(cut them loose) two bucks hung in the road fence.
Around here the lazy * highway dept doesn't move a carcass so they just lay there and rot away. Through the summer the buzzards are a secondary hazard at a road kill and several vehicles have been damaged hitting those nasty birds.

You have been lucky so far. Those whistles are worthless for anything but getting money out of well meaning purchasers.

I have had several deer and elk run in front of my truck when those were mounted.

My wife went on a $3000 deer hunt with her Subaru. Her hunt was a hit and release, but our Insurance still had to pay the $3000 fee.

I have had several deer and elk run in front of my truck when those were mounted.

I always wondered if they did anything to be honest.

I really only drive one stretch around here where you are likely to encounter deer.

It's a long 2 lane highway with a 55mph speed limit, that borders a 'conservation' area.
Only time I see them is in the winter, and usually late at night.

They get out by the road foraging, so I flip my brights on and off to look for eyes glowing. If I see some, I slow down and start to beep my horn.

They usually run back into the tree line.
Yea,.....considering the miles I have driven in my life, I have been very lucky.

I hit a dog one time unfortunately,....unavoidable on my part, and one squirrel.
If it wasn't for the way I drive, the squirrel count would be in the dozens.

I'm just one of those folks whose eyes are constantly scanning the sides of the road up ahead of me, and I usually pick up the slightest motion. If a squirrel gets panicked/confused like they do sometimes in the road,....all you have to do is blow the horn, and they will run.

Most people don't do that, and end up running them over.
I'm also one of those saps that will pull off the road to move a turtle, non-venomous snake, or even to pick up a dog wandering in the road.

Hurt his pride I think more than it did the KIA...

Right now, he's driving the wife's car back and forth to school...
And the wife is driving the DODGE...
So yesterday, I had a haircut late in the afternoon... Had the wife drop me off on her way to teach...
And arranged for the son to pick me up on his way back home later.

Got in the car and said... "I heard... They've changed the name of your car..."
Him... "Whatta ya mean... Changed the name?"
Me... "They changed it to Killed In Action... So watch where y'er going please..."
"I haven't planned to be on y'er hit list too."

His girl friend just giggled... snickered. [:D]
