SALT LAKE CITY - Community leaders and a local company are working to mobilize Latino residents to get to the polls and vote with free taxi rides.

The project comes from Latino leaders who work with the Hispanic population at Centro Civico. In 2008, they say there were successful in mobilizing about 200 citizens from the Latino community to vote using just a couple dozen volunteers.

This year, they recruited two Utah taxi companies with 24 vehicles between them. They hope to help people who don't have reliable transportation within the community. Raul Ramirez, of Utah Eagle Taxi, will be voting this year and he says the community has been good to him, so he's happy to return the favor.

"I'm not taking sides politically. I just want to help the community," Ramirez said. ".We've been receiving a lot from the community. So that's a good thing. I guess there comes a time you gotta give back a little bit."

This year, Salt Lake County is required by law to have voting information in Spanish at the polls, so leaders feel that's one part of their mission to make voting accessible for Hispanics already accomplished
