They are hacking hunks out of me soon.

Hunks of bone!

They are going to remove the back part of my neck spine bones, exposing the spinal cord. This will relieve the severe compression I have on the cord from a ossified ligament and other messed up junk in there. The bone will be removed at C-3, C-4, C-5 and C-6. Rods and screws will be added on both sides so I can trip metal detectors for the remainder of my life and hold my head on. It is being done at Riverside Hospital in Columbus OH.

The damage is BAD the doc wants to get-er-done the first week in April. Three days in the hosp many weeks of recovery at home, no driving. Kind of hard not to drive for a road warrior sales rep. [:(]

His words " you have a massive amount of muscle in your neck, I will have to do a lot of cutting to get to where I need to work". (I have a 20" neck, well what neck that shows above where my shoulders crapped a head.) The doc said my recovery was going to be "uncomfortable". You know what that means. His fear is if I get rear ended in a MVA I will be paralyzed for life. That scared the crap out of me.

If I get this done in early April I hope to be of some use by the end of May so I can get the garden in. This is really going to mess with my trigger time this summer, I am scared silly but know it has to get done now. The look on his face when he looked at the MRI was priceless. CRAP.

Here is the operation they will do on a bigger scale.

So sorry you're having to go through this, but I have a good feeling that you'll come out the other side 100 times better. The surgery sucks, the rehab is a beast, but afterwards it's so much better. If I were you on the calendar I'd circle a day four months after the operation. On that day, you can think to yourself, I'll feel about right again. Looking at that circled day every day as you do rehab can really help. Worked for me.

Best of luck... I have some C-3 and 4 problems from a rear end in 96. Usually does not cause me any problem unless I really over do it. Like at SHOT this year.

Hopefully it will remedy your pain and give you full function.

Prayers and best wishes for you.May your recovery be fast and as painless as possible.Don't push it too much afterwords. They give you pain meds for a reason, use them.Listen to the doc and try to do what he tells you.
Again prayers and positive thought for you.

I am fused from t-2 to sacrum. Fighting neck problems now.Doing traction at home, stretches and all that.Saw the surgeon week before last.He is not too hopeful.

I really don't want to be fused from head to tail.

I worked with a guy for years who did not have a neck. He took the no-neck jokes with stride and his response was always "My brain is to large, a neck can't handle it"

Hope things work out for you.

My prayers are with ya Bruce.
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain
