How can Congress let this happen...

National defense is the priority job of the national government. Article One, Section Eight of the Constitution lists 17 separate powers that are granted to the Congress. Six of those powers deal exclusively with the national defense-far more than any other specific area of governance-and grant the full range of authorities necessary for establishing the defense of the nation as it was then understood. Congress is given specific authority to declare war, raise and support armies, provide for a navy, establish the rules for the operation of American military forces, organize and arm the militias of the states, and specify the conditions for converting the militias into national service.

Could some one explain to me what happens when soldier gets
    "Layed off"??

Does he lose all military benefits, collects unemployment, can be called back, loses his rating for rank advancement????

As long as they didn't screw.up.really bad they should get an honorable discharge, go through a transition assistance class and in certain situations may be eligible for a severance package. Most will find jobs. It's not like most military folk to want to be bored or not have some sort of accomplishment in there daily lives and depending on background many will have some sort of marketable skill (i.e. an electroniso tech in the Navy might find several avenues of employment in construction or in working in that field that does have demand)

Lay off is the term used by the reporter. I would think the Army will simply reduce numbers through attrition (folks not re-enlisting). If too many want to re-enlist, some will be denied.

No such thing as a "lay off".

Reenlistment denials, forced retirement for enlisted.

Released from Active Duty for "Reserve" officers serving on Active Duty.

Unemployment - Not eligible. Almost impossible to xplain all the variables.

Also, look for troops to be discharged for almost any reason, i.e. overweight, DUI, etc.

Short reply - GI's getting screwed AGAIN.

But, Osamabama says "We got the ISIS on the run". He is just confused on the direction they are running.

    Added:

Last April I was talking with a Senior NCO at Ft Hood, Tx. He stated 76 people were eligible and requested reenlistment in his unit that month and only two were approved by higher Hq.

Not the first time this has ever happened.

It's known as being RIF'ed, as in 'Reduction in Force'

The drawdown was proposed before sequestration. It was the respective service chiefs whom decided they did not need the people since mass withdrawals from Iraq and Afghanistan. Has nothing to do with the budget.

Fact, the Repub defense spending bill from the House was greater than that proposed by Obama and the socialists

Typical of democrat owned MSN "Manure Spreading Network" to play politics and distort reality.

It happens in cycles. Build up...draw down. I went through three of them during my career.

Happen to my son when Bill and Hillary took over from George...He opted out and went to school on his severance pay...Lot better off today, especially the way the military has gone with the volunteer service..[V]

Got lucky while I was in Started when they were down but needed someone with my Mech Skills. After that Each reenlistment got a bonus cause my field was still down. Only the last one and by then I could see my Retirement.

In the 90's they did offer an early out payment. But it was never called Severance Pay.

It's a way to try to stem the tide of going into debt even more. With all stimulus by the Feds and with The Fannie Mae & Freedie Mac crisis is just around the corner! [:o)] Obama has bankrupt the country for The NWO to be swepted in! George Bush helped however with starting all these oil wars.

China stock-market is crashing now and soon The EU with The USA will crash, just watch! Even The IMF with BIS are balking about the Elephant in the room!

The inspector general's report noted that for the past few years, Fannie and Freddie's net income has been driven by major legal settlements as well as the revaluation of tax assets and other one-time items that aren't sustainable. That, along with the companies' declining capital cushion, increases the likelihood they could need more government money in the future, the report said.
