What's it cost to ship a rifle now days?

I just won a rifle on the auction side. There was no shipping specified and the seller said he would get a quote for the winner based on local.

I was told it's 48.00 to ship to me. I am in the lower 48 as they say. I've always been charged 20 to 35 tops.

The seller is not a dealer by the way.

I wrote back asking if the shipping rate was really at cost. Maybe it is I don't know can anyone advise?

Maybe he has to pay a transfer fee to his dealer.

Don't know but he should let me know if that is the fact and should not he disclose that in the auction? He's in SC one of the more gun friendly places.

That's why I always send a seller my zip code and ask for shipping charges before I bid if they aren't stated.

Depends on who the rifle is shipped through, and if it is insured or not. The length and weight of the packaged rifle also is a factor.

I ship usps priority, to ship a bolt action rifle from WI to CA will cost the better part of $50.00.

Boxes and packing supplies are not cheap either!

I suggest that you try and get a shipping estimate in the future if possible.

Buyers don't appreciate just how much time and effort goes into packaging and shipping long guns, not to mention the costs involved until they actually ship one!![:)]

This is why if I am interested in an "actual shipping cost" item, I will send a polite email asking for costs to a certain zip code.

IMHO, not asking before the fact is opening yourself up for no lube. [xx(]

Ahhh. That ole "bidding is a contract stuff" or "buyer pays...." when every penny is not stated in the ad. Buyers fall for that stuff many times daily. I did when I paid $19 to have a $8 sling shipped 300 miles from Picayune MS to AL.

Also had gun switched (the ss# did not show in the ad photo). Gimmicks are used by some.

Some sellers want to be paid for "going to the bathroom", packing, tracking #, etc. They should add that into their starting bid.

    Learned some lessons.

Guess I'll have to start doing that. I usually skip over auctions that don't list a shipping cost, just like a reserve auction to me.

I too learned the hard way, I no longer bid on any item that does not specify freight cost. Some sellers simply make $$ on the handling part. I ups a rifle to monhtana from South Florida for $32.00 insured.

Buyer said insurance plus shipping is 68.00 dollars.

Just got an email he said he would double check that and did and I got another mail saying it's something to do with Pakimail via UPS. He said he got a new quote from the UPS store and total shipped and insured is 37.00

This is his first sale I guess. [:D]

    I thought something was off.

Well I take this view. If you don't list a set rate then it's open to negotiation. In the end I will pay what is demanded but I will let the seller know the feed back will reflect the event.

I won a rifle just like this one. But mines a century with no-dak spud receiver. It was 800 and no other bidders. I guess all the bidders on this one did not see the other one I won.

Mine came with 4 mags. I already have three for it on hand. Nothing else will be needed save some ammo.

Last month I had to ship a rifle to a buyer. It cost me 149.00 for shipping by ups. I took it to a dealer and he charged me 75. 50 for shipping and his 25 dollars for his ffl transfer. I wish I could ship a gun for 40 bucks. New Communist friggen Jersey is a total ripoff.

I just went through the pain and expense of finding a box suitable for shipping ($7.50), some packing tape ($6/roll), some bubble wrap ($12), and USPS shipping insured for $500 ($25), and was supposed to add all this up (my auction was a buyer pays shipping), but charged only $28 in the auction.

The UPS Store is NOT UPS. It is an independent contractor, & they set their own rates. Mine charges double the UPS Calculator charge.

OTOH, Fedex Office is Fedex, & charges "calculator" rates.

Ya, I got burned a little on my first item. I charged $45 for shipping and it cost me $100 (including $10 for my FFL).

You can't depend on the UPS calculator even if you go to a UPS customer center. I calculated $46 and the service center charged me $53. Just to double check, when I got back home I keyed in the exact data that was on my receipt and sure enough it came to $46!
