A page came up that warned I had a virus & to call a certain number
so that Microsoft could fix it. It warned me not to shut down my computer or I would not be able to reboot it.
Now I learned long ago Microsoft won't help you fix anything & these
messages wind up with someone in India wanting to charge you to "fix" what they say is wrong.
I shut my computer down & everything seems fine.

Malware. Use a good cleaner. And yeah, Microsoft has no interest in cleaning anything out of your computer. Phishing scam.

Couldn't. It would not let you do anything.

#1 do you remember what ad was displaying on the page? Also EXACTLY what time did this happen?

The only way to get rid of it is to kill it in the process manager. Press CTRL SHIFT and the ESC key. On the Applications tab highlight the explorer entries and then END task.

We have all the programmatic ads turned off on the auction side until we can figure out what is causing this.

Also did this one have sound??? I saw one today that was talking to me saying to call the number.

Also I need to know what browser you are seeing this in and what version of that browser. I'm pretty sure I know what is happening, but I can't reproduce it yet.

Both Chrome and IE. Both had sound. Running anti-malware fixed this for me.

I know what they are doing, I just don't know HOW they are doing it. It is coming in as part of what may look like a legit ad but filtering it out is going to be a problem. (And I am heading up to Kansas in the morning for the Shooting Industry Masters.... on the range all day Friday and Saturday so no time for being a propellerhead! ) Some of the Ad guys are on my team so we will talk about it while we are there.

I have Windows 7 & use MSN for a browser. It was shortly before I posted. I don't know what I was on when it happened. It locked up my computer but when I turned it off & back on everything was okay.
I didn't get any sound just the message to call & NOT turn off my computer.

It's a scam,I called the number and of course
I got some middle eastern guy I hardly could understand.
I spoke for quite some time, he took control of my computer
and said it was in touch shape for me..good for hackers.
He mentioned some bad viruses and showed them
to me on my computer.Online banking and bill paying was
dangerously at risk. That worried me so I asked how
I could prevent this.Plans were described to me starting
and $500 down to $200.I told him they were to expensive
and he said he had a one time deal of $100+ to remove
all the viruses but I would get no software.I said no thank you
    and used Spy-bot;Winaso Reg cure/Malware bytes, Anti-malware
and all issues went away.Sorry so long winded.

Bad move to do that. There are guys out there that can screw with your computer in ways you never thought possible. With access to your computer he could have installed a Trojan Horse virus that could take days, weeks or even months to make itself known.
I'm not saying he did, I saying he could have.

If someone reads what was said then quiet possibly they might have pause to think before getting into something above their pay scale plus posting on this forum helps kill time till beer thirty.

Good excuse to buy a new computer. Also change all passwords.
I knew better but only because it happened to me several years ago.
I took my computer to Best Buy to have it flushed out.
A few weeks ago I found my wife talking to the same type of person
but she hadn't yet let him have control of her computer. She is using my old laptop until our son stops by & she can get him to check hers out.

I'm retired & widowed so it's just me and my old useless dog taking life easy. I go fishing when I want in the summer and hunting in the fall & winter.
Pay scale... I don't need no stinking pay scale as long as I can afford beer, fish bait and bullets.[:)]
