Long term gun storage

I have a few old bolt action firearms that I just don't use anymore. I'm thinking about putting up in the attic for years without checking on them. They will be subject to very high heat, and below freezing weather at times. It also can be humid up there. I know I can store them in better places, but that isn't my question.

How would you go about storing them. [;)]

PS. I can break them down into smaller pieces.

I just used RIG on a few of mine for long term storage, but they are in a less harsh climate. Find some cosmoline and mummify them?

I have stored guns in the attic before with mixed results. I had one get much more rusty, and another one that had warped wood stock afterwards. AFter that, I now keep them in the house, or at the very worst, in the garage. It just doesn't get as hot there as it does in the attic.

coat them with oil, close up in plastic tubes and store in the basement where temp is reasonably constant...but they will be irrelevant when you are taken to the fema retreat

Cold won't hurt them, heat could dry out the stocks but humidity is deadly on metal.....RUST. I store all my weapons (whoops, when I had them before the boat sank and they all went to the bottom of the lake) in the house under a dehumidifer....learned the tough way. I lost a great Tula SKS to bad (read humid) storage and had to change my habits.

The bottom of a lake is pretty hummid.
