Puppies were found bound and gagged in Youngstown for the second time in a week. Except this time, the puppies didn't survive.
Dave Nelson, deputy dog warden with the Mahoning County Dog Warden's Office, said the 6-or-7-week-old German shepherd puppies were found near the WRTA terminal downtown. He estimates they had been dead about four or five hours by the time he found them.
"One of the most disgusting things in all of the years I've been here," Nelson said.
He said it's one of the worst animal abuse cases ever discovered in Mahoning County. The puppies were bound, gagged and left for dead about 15 feet behind the WRTA bus station in downtown Youngstown.
"I've been doing this job a long time and haven't seen anything like that in a long time," Nelson said.
He said the knots were tied so tightly and intricately that the more the puppies tried to pull away, the more they were strangled.
"The way that they did this is not your typical animal cruelty," Nelson said.
But what's most alarming to officials is that the gruesome display is eerily similar to another case from just last week. Another puppy of a similar or same breed was found bound and gagged in the exact same way on South Lakeview Avenue, which is on the West Side of the city. A neighbor saw it lying on the porch of a nearby house and called police.
Officials were able to treat that puppy and it did survive.
Authorities are now looking at surveillance tapes from WRTA and surrounding buildings, hoping to find the person, or people that did this.
"A crime like this is they just don't want to bring them to the pound or take them somewhere and drop them off. This was an act for fun, killing, that's what this is, and people like that, you need to prosecute and find them," Nelson said.

I believe that "people" like that cannot be rehabilitated.
People like that do not deserve to live (and I use the term "people" very loosely).
Ducky' defendant must work at shelter
Judge also orders animal abuser to make restitution
From Staff Reports Cumberland Times-News
CUMBERLAND - A city man was sentenced Friday in Allegany County Circuit Court in connection with the taping, muzzling and abandoning of a a 10-month-old dog last March that affectionately became known to area residents as "Ducky."
Ricky A. Adams was sentenced to two 90-day sentences that Judge W. Timothy Finan then suspended.
The judge placed Adams on supervised probation for three years with the conditions that he perform 100 hours of community service at the Allegany County Animal Shelter.
Adams was also ordered to make restitution of $1,372 to the Western Maryland Animal Hospital, according to court records.
In addition, Adams was ordered by the court to be prohibited from possessing or residing with a canine for the term of his probation.
Adams was convicted of abuse or neglect of an animal and conspiracy to abuse or neglect an animal last November in circuit court. He pleaded not guilty to the charges last June.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant State's Attorney Sam Lane. Adams was represented by attorney Stephen R. Tully.
All charges against co-defendant Frederick Newton Lease, 27, were dismissed last September in circuit court due to a reported lack of evidence.
The case stemmed from an incident in late March 2011 when a 10-month-old terrier was observed running in the Corriganville area with his muzzle duct-taped.
Various sightings and an extensive search over several days led to the discovery of the dog on the back porch of a Lonaconing residence. The case drew widespread interest and support of numerous community residents.
The dog was provided medical care by Dr. John T. Fox at the Western Maryland Animal Hospital and was later taken to the Ark of Hope Rescue where he was adopted by an area family
Off with their sick heads.
Harvest his organs for others so at least he will have done some good for this world.
NOT THE BRAIN MASS IN HIS HEAD
Most of them started out that way it seems.
Eventually they get bored with animals, and move to humans for prey.
I guess I will never figure out what would make a person want to torture a pet.[xx(]
