Coyote Scope

OK GB member, I am sitting here with my son having a heated discussion on what scope to put on top of his 243 for coyote hunting, I say a Nikon Prostaff or a Weaver so he can use it for deer huting also but he says he wants the higher power Tasco or BSA scope. Any input of the later two scopes? I have heard mixed reviews on them but would rather spend a little more and get a better scope

What's your budget, magnification, and at what range is the coyote and deer hunts?

The old Tasco (Made in Japan) are very good optics!

I've got a Nikon 6-18 with the BDC Reticle on my 25/06. (coyote gun). I'm impressed with it, I'm pretty hard on the rifle and scope as they bounce around in the truck most of the time. It's always held it's zero for me. The optics aren't as good as the high end stuff but they still get the job done. Dave

A 3-9 variable scope is plenty for coyote hunting with a 243(Win?). I have a Weaver 3-9x40 on the 22/250 that I used for years and never once felt underscoped. Made shots up to 1/4 mile with some regularity.

You are right, no question.

High magnification is over-rated, especially on a cheap scope.

I'd go with the prostaff. He should be more concerned about light transmission than magnification. imho.

4-14x42 Burris all day every day. I have half a dozen of them I bought used off of here. These guys taught me to buy Burris and cry once. I have others, but this scope has never let me down.

What ever one gives the best light transmission. One argument that some will use for magnification is to "ID" the dog at long range so your sure your not taking out someones "Designer mutt". Myself use High power binos/spotting scope for that.

Outside of that, 3x12x40/44 mm
or 6x20/24x50 should be fine. Just my 2 cents.
