Here in WI they are pretty dang hard to get too! This was my 5th year applying and I just got a letter in the mail saying I get one. [8D] This will be my second chance at a black bear and I can taste the hot beefs already. [:p] Now I just have to wait until September to start hunting!

Congrats!!! But I'm a little confused here, "black bear... hot beefs"??? You do understand there is a difference. There are black cows, but they generally look a little different than a "black bear." Just want to make sure you don't shoot the wrong thing. Keep us posted. We'd like to see some pictures!!!

    Thanks for your concern. [:D]

We have just always called them hot beefs still. To me, black bear meat is really similar to "tough-stringy" beef cuts. Not good for much other then "hot-beefs" and roasts....jerky can work too.

Congrats on the tag! Some of the best meat I ever had was from a black bear up in SE Alaska. the fella took a rear quarter and had it cured just like a ham. OMG was it good! Tender & sweet. I've been told that the key to good bear meat is to get one that has had berries as the primary component of it's diet.
