I've been reading the thread about Tigers and Shermans, but the mention of Pershings got my interest...
Did anyone ever have the good fortune to see the program on tanks... Either History or Discovery channel? Somewhere in France or Germany a photographer got in the right position to film Dodge City... Tiger or Panzer facing off with a Pershing.
Both sides knew the other was there. Both buttoned up and decided to have a showdown. Pershing got off the first round and badly damaged the German tank. The commander was lying on top of the turret with his legs gone and the crew was abandoning ship. They had barely cleared when the Pershing nailed them again. What a slaughter and so unnecessary.
Brave, foolish, stupid... But awesome! It's just hard to imagine facing off like that on purpose. No lack of guts on either side.

Probably the most effective tank of all time and built in the greatest numbers. I think around 40,000

Famous line from the movie Tombstone with Val Kilmer:
Bandit to Doc Holliday:"You're just a drunk piano player, you're so drunk , you're probably seeing double!"
Doc Holliday: "I've got two guns, one for each of you! "

I too saw the Panther tank.
If you have a real interest in tanks, you should make a visit to the Patton Museum at Ft. Knox, KY. It is awesome!
+1 on that.
It would be great if they all were restored and fully operational. With a company or battalion dedicated to just keeping them maintained.
I did enjoy the Patton Museum.
My grandfather fought in WWII in the 8th Armored Division. He was TC of a Sherman, I believe.

Nice to realize that there still exists a human element and that the memory still hurts. We don't kill wantonly and we always pay a price even when we win.
You're welcome!
I never got the chance to shoot a Abrams, but I did get the opportunity to drive and shoot the M60A3. That was one hell of a thrill. I was around alot of armor in my service days.
I have gotten to drive, load and gun on an M60A3. I was not even a tanker at the time. We would be at the same location at gunnery practice and I would fill in if they were short a crew member. One old TC would get mad as all get out because I would not use the trigger to set off a round. I do not know what it was called. But the gun had a red device mounted to the side of it that I would reach over a twist each time I fired the main gun. Loading was about the most fun job on the tank I thought. Just mark each round with a grease pencil S,H or A for Sabot, Heat, or HEP and have at it. Learned one thing when driving. NEVER drive with the hatch popped open when live fire is going on..lol The percussion would render you death for about an hour. Lucky thing I did not rupture an ear drum. I wished that I could have taken some of those guys out and let them try my job at the time. And a lot of them wished that they had signed p for the Air Cav.
