What is your favorite brand of 22 LR??

Got my 12 yo son a SS Ruger Mark III for Christmas. VERY accurate. When it shoots. The first 200+ rounds thru it were jam after jam. After 250 rounds, jamming (as in failure to feed) got down to about 1 in 10. Vast improvement. If I only loaded 8 rounds per mag, feeding improved, so maybe the new mag springs were too stiff. Got those mags loaded now, hoping to lighten spring pressure by next weekend when we will give it another go. Am using the cheapest ammo I could find. Winchester 36 grain plated HP, 333 pack. I'm wondering if the El Cheapo ammo is part of the problem?

So what brand of 22LR feeds really well for you?

My game plan is to run 200+ more cheap rounds thru it, using the hopefully lightened mags, seeing if this is just a "breaking in" problem. At that point switching to better ammo to see if that makes a difference. Still have problems, than Ruger customer service is the next option.

Since I always look for the good in everything, I have spent extra time with my son. Always a good thing. Also, after clearing nearly 100 jams, he has learned a lot. I'm guessing he might be able to safely clear a Mark III faster than most of the members of GB![:D]

I like the CCI that comes in plastic packs, I have had problems with .22 ammo that comes in the milk cartons. I have an older .22/45 and it shoots anything but its well broken in. I think that the milk carton ammo gets rattled around to much and loosens the primer powder and crinkles them up some. Just my opinion but have never had a problem with any brick of ammo, but always with milk carton ammo.

I have a P22 that won't work right with anything but CCI Mini Mags. They have a much sharper crack when fired than the other brands of ammo I've tried. I think that's tied into the reason they work better.

Sounds like it is your magazines causing the problem, not the ammo. My three Rugers digest any and all brands with no problem. If you find that functioning is better when you load less than a full magazine, that right there points the finger at the mags. Perhaps you can lighten the spring and try it. I can't say that I have ever heard of disassembling a Ruger .22 magazine, but that doesn't mean it is impossible.
Anyone? Suggestions on lightening the spring?

I shoot smallbore indoor 4-position and shoot up MANY thousands of rounds in practice and competion. My favorite cheap ammo is the Winchester Xpert .22 hp in the bulk carton. At one time I could buy it for $7.99 a box (500), it's gone up quite a bit since then. The stuff is extremely accurate at the ranges I shoot and have had a very small percentage of duds,(I can count the duds on one hand). I've shot many cases of this stuff. Dave

My Mk II eats anything. My new GSG is pickier, and jams up if no cleaning after 300 rounds or so

For non target shooting, I use the CCI Blazers in the box. Have never had a misfire in 1000's or rounds. Many of 22lr auto problems can be traced to buildup at the front of the chamber. I use a brass brush and scrub that area well after shooting. Seems to take care of any issues.

I have the best luck with Federal 510. If you want it to work well, put a good extractor in it such as a Volquarson. They cost about $12. Everyone I know with a 10/22 has replaced them.

OK. Per thoughts and advice of GB members, I have just ordered a Volquartsen extracter. I loaded the mags and slid in an extra round backwards to compress the new mag springs. Bought a plastic cased box of CCI Mini Mags. If these things don't make it jam free it's Hi Ho Hi Ho it's back to Ruger it go.
I should add that my Mark II shoots everything reliably. It has also had thousands of rounds thru it. Got it so long ago I can't remember if there was a breaking in problem or not.

My Buck Mark will shoot any LR ammo but Remington Golden Bullet. Of the 1000's or rounds I've shot through it, only the RGB has had FTF.

Federal Champion works great in my MKII, Marlin 60, 10/22s, AR15 ciener conversion, and worked great in my GSG-5 until I got rid of it

    It's accurate, reliable and cheap.

Could someone please recommend for me a brand that would most easily extract from a S&W 17-9?

    Some brands get stuck.

CCI Stingers for rifles - very accurate and clean!
Eley Tenex for serious handgun target matches. [Hamden,CT - Supermatic Trophy]
Federal, CCI and Wolf, just for fun.

Stick with 40 grain solids until broke in. CCI is favored by 70 percent of the Bullseye shooters on the line followed by Agulia, SK-Wolf Match and Eley.

Hi Jorge.....try a dry patch thru the chambers before shooting. Then use standard velocity ammo. Then clean the chambers well after use, and use a bore brush there, too. I save the HV stuff for my rifles. BT
