My wife signed up for one of those 6 month same as cash plans with best buy a few months back. Last month she received her bill in the mail and I told her to pay it off early just to avoid any possible problems. On her statement they had a box titled "promotional payoff amount" so we paid that amount, this month she gets another bill in the mail. No problem, maybe it's an error so she call's the customer service number and gets to customer service. Then this guy asks her for her complete name, she gives it, then he wants her FULL social security number and date of birth! She asked him to hold and told me, so I got on the line and asked why he needed that, he said to verify her account, I then asked to speak to a manager and he would not transfer me. I ended up getting mad and hanging up, but have any of you ever been asked for that much detailed information from a credit card service over the phone? I thought it was extremely odd.

Last year i bought a Nikon camera the Nikon S6100. I bought the warranty for the camera. They told me all i had to do was bring the camera in and they would replace it no questions asked. I could drop it in water and it was covered.

Today i turned it on and it would not work. I took it back and the manager said they had to send it off to get fixed. I told them what i was told and he said they did not do that. I told them the salesman told me that. I asked him why would i buy a warranty for a year when the camera came with a 1 year warranty if i could not replace it. He basically told me i was lying. His salesman would not do that. Then i could trade it back in for my money back.

I told him i was not stupid best buy here will not give cash back they only give you store credit. He said i was right. So he tried to get me again. So now i am really upset.

I have to come up with a way to not get mad. I will never buy any thing from them again ever.

As long as you get the camera back in a short time frame what is the problem?

Best Buy's trying to figure out how to survive. Let me cut to the chase, adjust your confidence in what they tell you.

By the way, contracts, or, if a salesman tells you something, tell him you need it in writing.

No documentation or warranty papers? It should say what the procedure is.

They can not guaranty me the camera will be back by Christmas. My parents are in their late 70s and i might not have many more with them. Plus thanksgiving. All pictures count.

That and the fact i paid for a lie.

I stopped in a while back to pick up some photo printing paper, and at the check out, were displays of several items I believe I had seen on tv infomercials. Only thing missing was "Wait, there's more".

Just trying to stay in business until everyone has to collect sales tax on internet purchases....Then they will have a little more level playing field.

Day. Why not return it for you store credit and pick up another cam? Maybe later model for same money. Might consider that option.

On a return/exchange, Radio Shuck would charge a 15% restock fee.

If I do buy from any of the big box stores, I never buy a warranty..Why would you need a warranty if you bought a good product?[:o)]

call the manager up again and explain to him if he doesn't agree to what his sales man said that you will call up corporate and file a complaint with them. They don't like it when corporate gets involved, makes them look incompetent. Had to do this with fleet farm awhile ago for a friend. Corporate called him back and had him go to the store were the manager apologize and made it right. This was with a gun purchase though but same principles.

I worked there, the warranty is bs and the customer is not #1. The bottom line is #1.

I dont know about the new warranty but the old warranty was it was replaced after 3 failures.

Most new warranties are replacement at the store. I know office depot is.

I did talk to the manager and he said it had to go to Nikon for repairs. I tried to get any other camera even offered to pay for a more expensive one but he would not budge.

He did offer for me to buy another camera until mine comes back.

When i get my camera back i will never buy anything from them again.

DId his sales man maybe embelish the facts on the warranty to get a sale? Even if this was the case it's bad form to call the customer a lair. Had the same thing happen with a scooter I bought once.

We bought a flat screen recently from Best Buy. The extended warranty they tried to sell us for 4 years covered repair or replace. If it wasn't repairable we'd get a new TV.

After I bought my 57" tv a few years ago, I declined the extra warranty. Sales man looked like he had been hit in the stomach by Rocky Balboa. Have read that the clerks are under huge pressure to sell the extra warranty as it generates more bottom line profit than the original item itself. I would never buy it as if you buy an electronic item today, say for $1, if it needs replacement in three years, the price for a new item will probably be around 60 cents due to the decreasing cost of new electronic technology.

Yeah our Sales person tried pretty hard to get us to pop on it too. as a matter of fact I just got an email from Best Buy reminding me that I have until Nov 7 to add the extended warranty...$199 for 2 years, $289 for 4 years....on a $1900 TV....

The last TV I bought, an RCA 52" HD projection TV is still going strong after 12 years. This new one better last more than 4 years!

This is one area where Maryland did things right. State law requires all sellers to conspicuously post their return policy &/or print it on your receipt. My local BB has a HUGE sign posted at several locations in the store.

They charge a huge restocking fee for returns. But, they have to if they can't resell an item as new. Even removing the plastic means they have to discount it; used, it's almost worthless to them.

You really need to read the newspapers. BB has been having financial trouble for several years, & is currently in Chapter 11 backruptcy. I will be surprised if they are open after Jan 1.

I have had no good experiences with Best Buy, and that is why I don't do business there.

Generally with any electronic item, problems manifest themselves quickly after initial operation. Extended warranties are a cash cow for the retailer.

If you don't have it in writing, you don't have it.

Extended warrenties benefit only the merchant.

Even with extended warrenties, BB is almost history.

Best Buy won't ever get my business. My Toshiba laptop's hard drive is failing and while I can buy a new hard drive I decided to upgrade and buy a new laptop. Stopped at Best Buy, Staples and Office Max (or maybe it was Depot). Best Buy's customer "service" from their sales staff was ZERO. Why spend money with them if they can't be bothered to talk to the customer?

    without any authorization

    they replaced the hard drive

it had no hardware problems whatsoever

it did have about $1000. worth of music though

I hope they burn in hell

Good reason to buy an external drive.

Few years ago, Walmart's camera selling strategy was their 1 year free exchange warranty. Try it out if you don't like it, return it for another one. Just save the box and your receipt.
