A Red Fox dropped by...

...last night. I hadn't seen one in years. I thought it was a coyote, until he stepped into the porch light. He snacked on the cat food, while keeping an eye on me, and then left. Anybody else have Red Foxes around?

I see them around here in SW Missouri at times. Not as often as I'd like, I think they're pretty cool. Of course, I don't have hens or other livestock that I have to worry about.

A lot of them around here. As a matter of fact, there is a breeding pair that shows themselves and their babies on the baseball fields when games are going on. They watch, but are apparently unimpressed.

OK, here's a pic for ya. Anyone know what it is? I think its a Ferrett. It has showed up in my backyard twice over a period of several years. Short little legs, about 4-5 inches tall.

I had a ferret for a while. I don't think it's a ferret. I think it's a weasel. Look up weasel and check out the pics. Pretty neat. I've never seen one in the wild. I saw a mink once while bowhunting.

These are the kind of fox we get around here.
I asked this one if he would pose for me.
So he sat down and waited until I got the camera.

Not really, but it sounds good.

I get $60.00 ea. for ALL that I can catch, in rubber jawed steel traps.
The Fox hunters release them in a 300 acre pen so that they can hear their hounds run them.

Correction? Believe that you meant that you have twice observed that one and/or another in your yard over the past couple of years. Id not be surprised is your place is on its regular rounds, whether that is every 24 hours or just several times through the week.

And I believe that you are correct ... to me it appears to be a ferret (at least that it is some sort of weasil type critter). It appears to be quite a bit larger sized than MOST weasel sort critters that I've had occassion to observe.

I'm definitely no expert nor particularly knowledgable of the various sorts of Mustelidae, but do find them to be fascinating and great to observe.

Thanks for the story and the photo.
