Buddy saved us $1300

I was trying to figure out a way to make $1300 before winter to buy a snow blower, and a buddy of mine called me yesterday. I asked him if he knew anyone that wanted to buy my car (it is for sale, by the way), and told him why I'm selling it.

He said, "I've got like 3 snow blowers just sitting around up here. You come up here, and I'll give one to you. All you have to do is get it running."

So, the wife and I head up to his place, about 40 miles away or so (maybe a little more), and I look at what he's got.

He points out an old Aries (sp?) snow blower that his dad bought decades ago, and I drag it out of the garage. First thing I did was check to see if it was seized up, which it wasn't. Next, I checked the spark...good spark. Then my buddy said, "Here, throw some gas in it and see if it runs."

Put about 1/3 of a tank of gas in it, and noticed right away that the tank was cracked and the line was leaking at a shut-off valve, but about 5 pulls later, it fired right up.

So, my buddy Rich saved the wife and me about $1300 by giving us a snow blower that just needs to have the fuel tank J.B. Welded.

What's a snow blower, and what do they do? [:D]

Hey Zulu, glad to hear of the good deed your friend did for you. [:)]

But, aren't used snow blowers less than $1300 on {elsewhere}? Honestly, I do not know, as I've never had a need for a snow blower. Hell, I've only seen snow a couple of times.

    Good deal.

Most likely an Ariens. They use to be one of the best lawn and garden equipment companies going and made top quality products.

Depends on how big it is. They go from tiny corded electrics to one's mounted on the front of trains and everything in between.

I was going to buy a big Husqvarna one with steering controls on the hand grips.

Ah, IC. Yeah, $1300 doesn't go far, when you're buying a fairly large, motorized, contraption.

You did well. Had a 10 hp Ariens (Tecumseh Engine), and it was an awesome workhorse. Sat for six months every year, and then fired right up. Just like you described.

And yes, they are the Cadillac of snowblowers. We lived at 10,000 feet in the Colorado Rockies, and that sucker worked from Halloween to the Fourth of July. It was a champ.

Just be sure to leave the tank empty in the spring. What if your bud going to do with only two blowers if it is a very snowy winter? How bad does it have to get to need three (or even two) blowers?

I rarely need even a shovel. Snow over night, gone by afternoon most days in the desert.

After sitting tha long, I would give it a good oil change / flush!![;)]

It was his mother and sister that kept buying small motorized items. One would stop working, and instead of getting it fixed, they'd just buy another one.

He's not at all worried about snow removal. He's got a skid-steer and a lawn-tractor mounted snow blower.

a snow shovel for the wife only costs 25 bucks.
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche

I used an Ariens a bit last year. it's nice to have a big self-propelled thing when you spend 3-4 hrs/night running a snowblower. It never bogged down.

We both saved $1300... snowblowers aren't needed in the south.

You might want to check into what caused the cracks in the first place.

I have an Ariens Rocket rototiller, uses the same Tecumseh engine, and same design overall.

    Pretty darn good machines.

A word to the wise: start looking now for a NOS US made carburaetor, while they can still be found, and set one aside.

About the only cause of death for them.

And don't worry about that small battery, put some adapters on them so you can jump start from a real vehicle battery using jumper cables or the like.

Mine's strictly pull start. It does have the hard-points for an electric start though.
