NUNN - had the same situation and I called the guy and told him I'd look into it. he said ok and then I proceeded to ask for his bank's phone #, account, and ss # and when he said no, I asked him how was I supposed to find out from his bank since my bank wouldn't have that info. he thought a minute and said sorry, I see your point.
some people don't know that - if I were to not know that, I'd think my bank could tell me if a check deposited has cleared or not. till I found out they couldn't do it, I was IGNORANT of the facts.
ignorance can be cured.
I will kindly cure your ignorance on this one.
For the check writer; if you log onto your account you will see if a check has cleared.
You can click on the Check # and a small window will open which shows a copy front and back of the check.
You email that to the seller as evidence the check has cleared.
For those that don't want him to see your account information remember he already had that check and the same chance to copy that info

I had a guy that got SUPER pissed off because I waited 6 days, actually 4 business days, after I deposited his personal check, to ship a gun to his dealer. He claimed that the check had been cleared for 4 days, and that I should have been able to find that out.
I gigged a seller on feedback that I dealt with for holding my gun waiting for a certified check to clear. Your situations, personal check I get that, but there is no reason to hold a certified check when he could call the bank, give them the check information and verify over the phone that the check is legitimate and funded. The buyer always seems to carry all the risk, and that is irksome. rant over.
I rarely sell anything but when I do I will state I hold certified or official checks.
I prefer a personal check because once paid it can not be reversed.
A certified check can be reversed for up to two years (according to my bank) and if that happens you find out after your funds are gone.
If someone buys something and decides he is not happy six months later and pulls that you may be out the money or have a hard time and be in the give a partial refund or face the bother situation
A USPS MO or a personal check eliminates that possibility. Sorry, a hold is legit on a certified check IMO

Will be reporting this to site so they know what you do to try to make more profit from their site. I know that I will not place any bids on your items."

I had a somewhat similar situation a while back with someone bidding on one of my M1s:
"We were doing fine at $5 bids, but once the price reached $1000 you got greedy and increased the bid amounts to $25. I don't like the way you do business and I'll never bid on another of your auctions".

I think who ever you spoke to at the bank is mistaken. Once a certified check is deposited or cashed the funds will be transferred. The only way to reverse a certified check is if the account payer on the check has possession of the check and returns it to the bank that it was written on, it gets voided and the funds returned to the payers account.
A certified check functions in the same manner as a MO. Once I pay you with that certified check, that money is gone out of my hands.
I had to open a support issue with a buyer on one of my auctions on ebay. I state that I will only ship to the lower 48 states and no where else. He won my auction and he is from Panama. I tried to work with him, and shipping to Panama was 452. We then set it up to ship it to his family in Miami. No problem. I sent him a new invoice for the winning bid and 20 dollars shipping. He is now refusing to pay the shipping charges. Got tired of his bS and gave him a negative feedback and ebay charged his card for their fees. Now he is really pissed.[:D][:D][:D] He was actually holding me hostage for payment over the shipping fees. What an *. It takes all kinds.

I did not know this, and think it is a good idea. Image the number of bids if the increment remained a 0.25 all the way.
Before the thread moves over to banking practices...
I think that there are some crafty bidders who are well aware of the jump from $5 to $25. They time their bidding so that they make the final $5 bid knowing/hoping that the next guy will see $25 and might drop out.

Most amazing thing in all this is that there are bidders who think the seller determines every facet of how the GB Auction side works. As if the entire GB company was the seller's domain to set the rules for.
I good friend had a Rolex watch for sale, advertised in the newspaper classified ads. This was before the internet. The buyer called him and asked him a lot of questions about the watch, which he answered. The buyer arranged to meet my friend and bring a certified check. My friend, believing that a certified check is as good as cash, agreed and met with the buyer. The exchange was made.
My friend deposited the check into his account, and few days later, it bounced. He found out that the check was no good. It was a forgery.
Last I heard, the buyer had been identified by the Secret Service as a check bouncing con man who traveled the country making his living doing just what he did to my friend, but he had not been caught.

It is however not uncommon for certified checks to be counterfeited these days and once the bank finds out, they remove the funds from the depositors account. It is therefore reasonable and prudent to hold the check (any check) for the maximum amount of time that the bank has the ability to retract the funds.
When I bid, I put in what I want to pay....simple way to buy at auction...if I get it for less, then good for me...if I lose it, I didn't need it any way...[;)]
My bank tells me the USPS money orders have been forged too. I try to cash them at the PO. But these days, they sometimes don't have the cash on hand, with so many using debit and credit cards.
Just recently, they couldn't cash one for just a little over $100 when I went in.
My small town bank uses Cashiers checks, instead of certified checks.
A cashiers check is THE BANK"S check and funds, not the person's, it's much safer.
While any paper transfer item can be counterfeited, it's hard to tell what looks good and not so good.
Big difference between a stopped/insufficient funds check and a phoney one.
The ONLY way to tell if a cashiers check is good is to call the bank that the check is drawn on. I had someone try to scam me with one for a Jeep I was selling. I brought it to the bank and I went to school with one of the girls that worked there. I asked her if she could check it for me. She was haapy to because she said she just got back from a class that taught them how to spot phony cashiers checks. Perforated edge, water mark, micro printing, routing and account numbers were all in order. She said it was good but would call the bank just in case. She was upset when the bank told her it was bogus. Everything she learned in class was useless with these new bogus checks.

if you call the bank that issued the Cashiers check and give them all the info that is on that check , ie ( Name, date, check # , check acct. # ) they can tell you whether they issued it or not ,
He is a GunBroker auction story of mine.. When i sold at the shows some years back i had picked up a strange front band that i couldnt id. I showed it to a few people there but no luck. then a man came by and said he was told i had an odd front band and wanted to see it. He offered me $10 which i declined then $20 and i still declined. I had explained i wasnt ready to sell it until i could id it. He said if he id'd it would i sell it. I said i wasnt sure. He said it was an hungarian 35m huzagul band. I said i needed time to look up a value. he offered$40 which i declined again. I put here on GunBroker and it sold for about $130. The next show i saw him at he was upset that i made him pay so much for it. The starting bid was $60, he got mad at me for his own greed.
