concealed carry

Just reading between the lines over a long period of time some people think they don't have to go through the NIC's check if they have a concealed carry permit. Am I missing something here?

I have a question, and maybe I'm just nuts. I know this may seem odd, but when I carry an autoloader I feel a little nervous carrying with a round in the chamber if it doesn't have a manual safety. A revolver doesn't phase me, and for some reason neither does my Ruger P89DC as once I chamber a round I can de-cock it, and I'm fine.

Here's the question: Is there any rational reason for me to feel that way? I have a Kel-Tec P3AT,a Glock 22 and a baby Browning 25 acp (manual safety, but boy it moves easy....) and I'm just uncomfortable chambering unless I'm practicing. I know, I know, defeats the purpose of self-defense as if you actually need it, having to chamber a round is a recipe for disaster.

Common sense tells me the striker fired Kel-Tec won't accidentally go off, as the trigger pull is pretty stiff. Haven't fired the Browning since my dad gave it to me, so not too sure there, and the Glock shouldn't be an issue either.

Maybe I should just stick to the airweight in warmer weather, and the Smith .357 or the Ruger in colder weather.......

I am a resident of Tennessee and I am overseas. When I get home I do intend to get my concealed carry permit. I would like to know from maybe some of you guys that are or were in the military, what is the deal with concealed carry at your duty station, it seems like it would be a hell no completely. Also would a permit obtained in TN work in NC if I am stationed there. Thanks for the help.

Im watching some show on spike, jewelry store owner gets shot by bad guy. The jewelry store owner was robbed and maced years earlier so he now carries. BG walks in, looks at some jewelry, then turn, pulls his revolver, the jewelry store owner actually beat the BG to the draw, but his safety was on!!!! This has lead me to believe the only way to carry is with a revolver, or auto, locked cocked and ready to rock. How do you guys who carry autos carry. Im going to be applying for my CCW in a little while. Just wondering how you guys handle it.

I have my permit. In Mass. its concealed carry only. I would like some advice on the type of holster I should buy. I want it to be comfortable and very easy to keep concealed. I'm sorry I should have mentioned the only pistol I have is a 9mm browning hi power, but I'd rather carry something smaller and I want the smallest chance that my gun will accidently flash someone.

Any advice on what I should buy Type of holster and if I should look at a new gun? PS (There are a million threads on best pistols for the job so that is not what I'm asking)
Update I just purchsed "The Gun Digest Book Of Concealed Carry"
    Massad Ayoob; Paperback; $12.49

As a concealed carry permit holder, a friend sent this to me, and am passing along FYI. Havent verified, but rather be cautious.

~When asked these three questions: Always respond with a NO.

From a Vietnam Vet and retired Police Officer:

I had a doctors appointment at the local VA clinic yesterday and found out something very interesting that I would like to pass along. While going through triage before seeing the doctor, I was asked at the end of the exam, three questions:

    1. Did I feel stressed?

    2. Did I feel threatened?

    3. Did I feel like doing harm to someone?

The nurse then informed me, that if I had answered yes to any of the questions, I would have lost my concealed carry permit as it would have gone into my medical records and the VA would have reported it to Homeland Security. Looks like they are going after the vets first.

Other gun people like retired law enforcement will probably be next. Then when they go after the civilians, what argument will they have? Be forewarned and be aware.

The Obama administration has gone on record as considering veterans and gun owners potential terrorists. Whether you are a gun owner veteran or not, you've been warned.

If you know veterans and gun owners, please pass this on to them. Be very cautious about what you say and to whom.

I want to introduce legislation , that if you qualify to buy a gun, with the Background check in place, that you automatically qualify to carry it.. That way, there would only be one Gun Owners list that you would be on. [:D]

I mean, if you can pass muster to buy one, then why pass a second muster to carry it?? DUHHHHHHHHHHH

Was reading an article in a recent gun rag regarding handgun holsters. In talking about concealed carry and the benefits of using some type of holster versus simply sticking the gun in a pocket, one paragraph really stuck out -

"Naturally, you can just stick a small handgun in your pocket unsheathed, but this is not without drawbacks. Lint and pocket crud can work its way into the action. And we remember one horror story from an instructor at the Smith and Wesson Academy concerning a plainclothesman who habitually packed a J-frame 2-inch wheelgun that way. Somehow, an errant dime worked its way into the gap between the cylinder face and the forcing cone, effectively tying up the gun. He'd packed it for about a week that way before he discovered the problem." Huh??

Excuse me, but how the heck did he know that the dime had been there for a week BEFORE "he discovered the problem"?

What is your opinion on states charging a fee for a carry permit?
    What does your state charge?

Read on another forum Senate bill 1390, if passed will allow you to carry in any state that allows Concealed Carry now. Will not need to get a permit from that state just have one from your home state.

Now don't blast me, but has anybody else heard this. If so can you provide the text of the Bill that supports this. I did look the bill up, But could have missed that section. But do not think so. Could it be added and I missed the addition. That could be.

How many people with thier ccw permits actually strap on and carry their gun day in and day out ? I have a ritual where I put in on every morning when i dress and take it off every night and lay it on the night stand by my bed.I have made this a habit for 15 years now.Reason I ask is alot of my friends have the permit and may wear from time to time or they may carry in their vechile if they think about it.To me it kind of defeats the purpose of staying prepared al all times.

without knowing what gun you want to carry, and in what style, all we'd be doing is throwing out brands that have worked for us in the past and could quite possibly have zero relevance to your situation. you could spend hourse researching holsters that are not for you.

with just a tiny bit of information, say for example "i want to carry my compact semi auto on the strong side of my body and havent really formed allegiances to any other carry specifics yet" instantly eliminates the need for people to reccomend shoulder holsters, cross draws, fanny packs, small of the backs and so on. mind you, member heres seem to like to go out of their way to give you information you specifically asked not be included, so i'd say tread lightly with the specificity of your request.

I have carried about every type holster there is and didn't like any of them. Some time ago I bought a Bianchi Hi Ride for my J frame and it does the trick. Probably buy one for my 45 and S&W 9mm.

You didn't say if you like leather or kydex. I like leather. Some folks like IWB(inside waist band) I don't. I use an El Paso Saddlery Street Combat for a .38 I carry and a Mitch Rosen belt holster for my LCP. Don't forget you need a good belt--toss away something that lets the gun flop around. As others have said we need more info.

I carried a HiPower for years in a vertical shoulder holster under a dark colored pattern oversized shirt. At 5'9" and 160# there's not many ways for me to hide that large pistol w/o wearing a jacket/vest.

I have a big collection of holsters on a shelf not being used, most of which were worn only long enough to discover I don't like them. Just added the new Nate2 holster to that collection.

I have not found one that compares to my Crossbreed Super Tuck.

I have been CCW for 40+ years and I can tell you there are to many variables to try and tell you what to carry. I am slender so the inside the pants does not work for me but I have friends who swear by it. I can't stand the small of the back carry and many I know swear by it. Your body type, weight, posture, type of dress, and many other factors come into play. You will have to try MANY ways and find what works best for you. I prefer the strong side belt slide/pancake holsters myself.
    Hope this helps,
    Jim [:D]

Just my opinion--for maximum NO FLASH, I recommend a small of the back holster. Get a good .380, like a PPK or a Bersa Thunder. Reliable, small, accurate, easy to conceal, light. You can hide it under a t-shirt just as well as a jacket.

For the high power, that's more like a 1911 or Beretta...and it's not as concealable...well, maybe in winter. I use a side holster for my larger guns, either paddle or belt, with two mags in a holster on the opposite side. But there is a definite flash potential.

I don't know if your hi-power would be comfortable in a small of the back? Longer barrels don't work so well in my opinion.

One holster does not fit all occasions. When spending alot of time sitting in a vehicle I perfer an ankle holster or cross draw. Spending lots of time walking then a SOB or hip holster works better. Suit jacket and tie I like a shoulder holster. Out rding my mtr cycle I like a boot gun or vest pocket type. Not one gun fits all and not one carry method is best. It depends on YOU!! but know this. What ever you carry practice, plan, and prepare .. and be aware.

I could use only one holster for everything (but I like to let the larger guns have some exercise occasionally). The one holster that does it all for me is a Desantis Tuck This. I can use it with any clothing I wear-Jeans, khakis, polo shirt, dress shirt & tie, suit, sweater, whatever. The belt clip is less obvious than that of the supertucks and the like. My EDC is an XD40SC. I can go bigger with a XD40 4" in the sof-tuck (similar to tuck this, but suede instead of nylon).

If you are determined go smaller and want max concealment, you might as well skip the .380 PPKs and Bersas, although they are GOOD guns, and go right on down to .380 minis, like a KelTec P3At in .380 and its clones. A .380 is about as small a round as most want to go for defensive use, and the KelTec is a pretty tight little package. My wife carries one religiously whereever she goes. It is reliable and she frequently takes it to the range to remind it of its duties, where it performs flawlessly.

there are 350ish municipalities in mass. the following map is representative of how licenses are issued in mass:

    macitytowngun.png

green town issue class a licenes with no restriction usually.
red town typically dont issue "carry" permits, but will issue a class a for sporting purposes or for job use(private security etc).
gray towns dont issue a license that covers high capacity pistols. they only comply with heller, so they only issue a license that allows you to have a pistol which is a class b(low capacity pistols, high capacity rifles).
blue towns, they dont have any feedback
    orange is conflicting information.

so as you can see, we're mostly a green state.
