Who says banging on things won't fix them?

Last year my Leupold RX 1000 rangerfinder quit working after dropping it in the garage. After the drop it would read a max of 10 yards, I was pretty mad because this thing would ping off of animals at around 700-750 yards and over 1000 off of vehicles or buildings. Yes there are better ones but for the money and what I used it for I had no issues, basicaly if it didn't read off the critter I needed to get closer.
Told myself several times to order a new one, well it never made the priority list for me and I forgot all about it. Now hunting season is here and I'm just now missing my rangefinder, as I get older I find myself misjudging distance more and more plus the wide open country makes it hard to judge distance. Went up in the mountains yesterday looking for Muleys, heavily wooded so range wasn't an issue, today is different! Was going to go into Bear Creek today where that fella got himself tore up by a bear a few weeks ago. As I was getting ready to leave I saw the elk herd across the road yeah I like to hunt on foot but I'm not going to pass up shooting one here if they cross.
So I got the sluggun out and ready, set up the spotting scope in the kitchen and been monitoring the herd all day, buzzards haven't moved and I've wasted a full day of hunting hoping they were going to come over like they normaly do.
Then I remembered the range finder, son-of-a-female dog! I forgot to buy a new rangefinder!! Spend about an hour looking at new ones and tinkering with my old one. No way to take it apart and see if something broke loose, it still reads but 10 yard max. I'm bummed out, them elk may get over here and I'll have to guess distance with that slugger. Sitting on the Thinking Stool [:D] and staring at the rangefinder I thought "what the hell, can't no more than break it" so I held it tightly, aimed the dented housing from the last fall at the sink and gave it a healthy WHACK!
Guess what? It works!! Went outside, pinged the horses at 159 yards, hit some antelope at 280 yards, hit a hanger at the airport at 725 yards, hell I think I fixed it! Just saved me a few hundred $$ [:D][:D]

Quick Antelope tip:
If you can't sneak up close enough; tie a 2-foot piece of Survey flagging on a fence, branch or bush. The movement will attract critters, and the flagging tastes salty, so they stick around.
