Appreciate Vehicle Choice Advice

I am about to replace a Ford F150 and am looking for an SUV-type vehicle with similar wheel base/GVW. I haven't bought any vehicle other than a pick'em up in the last twenty years, but I'm to the point I don't need the open bed and the grandkids are getting too big for the rear seat in the extended cab F150.
I'd appreciate any input.

If you want to stay with Ford, which is, IMO, a good idea, you are going to be looking at an Expedition if you are looking for a new vehicle.

MSRP is going to be $ 50,000.00+, but the Expedition remains a true SUV, and not a four wheel drive mini-van like so many are becoming.

You can never go wrong with a Toyota. Quality, dependability and great resell value.

If you get one that's 2 or 3 model years old, it's still practically new, and someone else already took the hit on depreciation. Oh, and it'll cost less.

Maybe try a F150 Supercrew? Huge back seats.

Wife has a Mercury Mountaineer. Basically a dolled up Explorer. Been a great vehicle.

Chevy Suburban, I bought my '94 used when it was under 6mo old, it has 300,000 miles on it now with no major repairs, most of that mileage came from towing my old Super Comp Dragster around the country, room for 8 of your close friends in comfort while towing a 10,000lb trailer, can't ask for more then that

I first switched from a pickup to an SUV 13 years ago. Drove that same 2000 Durango until six weeks ago, when I traded it on a Toyota Highlander. You won't regret losing that open bed very often - only when you want to carry something tall. The quiet, fuel mileage, security, and convenience MORE than make up for that one drawback.

Because I was recently in the market, here was my short list of possible buys in the 2008 to 2012 year range:

    Toyota 4Runner or Highlander
    Honda Pilot
    Nissan Pathfinder
    Hyundai Santa Fe
    Jeep Grand Cherokee
    Ford Explorer

The Santa Fe got Best Pick of SUVs by Motor Week recently, BTW. You wouldn't go wrong with any of them.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

I have a 2003 Santa Fe with 90,000 miles and no problems. Would like a new model but this one is great.

The only problem with this is that the Expedition was still sporting the Triton until 2015, now it is available with the Ecoboost. It is also consistently rated below the Toyota Sequoia and Suburban/Yukon XL.

This is the route I would go, Crewcab F150 with a truck cap/camper top. F150 gives you more powerplant options and is a bit more functional. It also depends how many grand kids you have, more than 3 then yeah sounds like you'll need a third row seat.

The Ford 150 Crew with a Retrax top is the best.5.0 Ford engine produces 360HP,and I get 21 MPG (4x4) on the road...and this Ford can carry the mail,or your Grand Children..[;)]If you are a girl, buy a Japanese product.

The wife just bought a Toyota Rav4 and loves it...

Do lots of test driving and research for what you need.
    You will be suprised.[:D]

+1 or a Honda CR-V as both get good gas mileage.

The Rav4 and CR-V are a bit small, especially in the cargo area. Here's why I bought a Highlander -- a 14-ft, 125 lb kayak needs something a wee bit bigger to haul it around.

Neither of which are a SUV-type vehicle with similar wheel base/GVW as a F-150.

I have an expedition and love it. Runs great, no problems and seats seven adults comfortably. Gas mileage is about 18 to 20 on the highway and 15 in the city. Great car to drive too.

Yeah I hear that Toyota's are the hottest thing on the market these days![:D]
I'd check into buying one of those fire proof suits if I were going to be driving one of the new ones.
