Burglary Next Door

The next house north of us is vacant, and has been for years. The old couple who lived there died, and the family still hasn't done anything with the house. A son-in-law of the deceased couple keeps some cows on the back of the place, so he is by there a few times a week.

Sometime last night or today, probably in the wee hours of the morning, someone pried open the front door, went in and took some stuff. I don't know what all, but it probably wasn't much. Dawnie had gotten up about 4 am to take Jake out to potty, and he would not stop barking in the direction of the house. It is possible that Jake was barking at a burglar that Dawnie could not see, and that maybe the burglar had to stop short of taking all he wanted.

Just a couple of days ago, I was away, and Dawnie was home alone. Around dark, some yahoo knocked at the door. Dawnie went to the door, and the yahoo asked if our Saturn is for sale. The car is parked next to my shop, not out by the highway as it would be if it were for sale. Jake did not like the yahoo, and let him know it in no uncertain terms, so he left pretty quickly.

Dawnie described the yahoo and the truck he was driving to the man who keeps his cows on the place next door, and he said he knows the yahoo as a thief who is always trying to steal stuff in the store where he works downtown.

We think maybe the yahoo is the burglar, and that he was checking to see if anyone were home at our house. See, we park in the garage, except for the Saturn, which is an extra car. When he stopped by, the garage door was open, and my truck was gone, so he may have thought everyone who lives here was away.

Dawnie keeps a pistol in her car, but maybe she should start keeping it closer at hand when she is at home.

I also cautioned her about opening the door to a stranger when she is home alone, and I would offer the same caution to anyone. A knock on the door does not require the door to be opened. One can speak through the door, let the visitor know there is someone home, and ask what it is he wants.

One should never remain silent when a vistor calls. If it is a burglar casing the home, and if the resident makes no sound, the burglar may well assume that the home is unoccupied and come on in.

I hope they get the perp. If they don't get him I hope he picks the next victim wrong and gets killed for his trouble.

Here in hillbillyville Ohio with Meth and pain pills driving property crimes I NEVER answer the door at night without a 45 in my hands.

Tell Dawnie to be careful and get her a second gun for the house, may I suggest a SIG P229 [:D].

Instead of defending, how about setting up to catch this critter?
He may be casing out your place next.

I always wondered if having a police officer would deter criminals, looks like not[:D]:D][:D][:D] Good thing nobody got hurt, if Dawnie would have gone to see what was up...... Just a good thing

Do you know what all was stolen? Around here if a house is vacant for a while the dopers/scrappers rip all of the copper pipes and wiring out of em. Talked to a guy I know today who owns a bunch of rentals in the inner city. Said he learned quick to rip all of the pipes out and replace them with Pex tubing. And doesn't install a water heater and furnace until it is rented. A/c unit doesn't get installed until around April.

I must of bought a dozen of these over the years for second, third , flour apartments.
I liked it so much that I bought one for my home 25 years ago for 381.00 at Lowe's. I never replace one yet, although the one I have at home now, the monitor is getting a little gray but the night vision still is good.

I have stated, never ever play the peek a-boo at the door opening with the chain security in tacked.

We get many door ringers and they hate when we do not come to the door.

I researched this unite and they are 139.99.
I don't know what the shelf life of it is now.

But I would not do with out one.

Is it brandishing in Texas to answer the door with your gun exposed on your hip?

Are you kidding? The law specifically allows persons to be armed, visibly or concealed, on their own property or property under their control.

Odds are he will be back next door to finish stealing anything not nailed down. Stopping and asking about the saturn is just an excuse to case your home. The dog is probably the game winner that they won't be back. Just remember sometimes there could be two instead of just the one at the door one in the car. Since weird stuff happened go out back and let off a few rounds each evening. Keep the .38 inside.

If you knock on my door after ten PM, you will be greeted with a .45 in hand.. Most of my friends call me before they come over no matter what time of day it is..And I extend the same courtesy before I 'Pop" in on them..[:0]

I like Jake. When he is on alert, the hair on his back stands up about 4 inches, and his tail bushes out like a big tomcat. He has developed a very deep voice and his bark is enough to convince most people to stay away.

don't leave your firearm in the car unless you plan on 'gifting' it.Also, perhaps next time someone knocks tell her to say " My husband just got off duty ,do you want me to wake him so you can talk to him?"

    1. A gun in the car is no good, if you're not in the car.

    2. That was a classic caseout. If it was me, I'd sit behind the door with two pistols and a shotgun, leave several newspapers on the front step, not answer the door, and wait for him to discover the door's not locked.

    3. Give Jake a steak for me.

That could be a way to encourage said burglar to think seriously about a career change.[8D][}:)][:0]

Neighbor got burged a while back, idiot dropped his appointment slip with his probation officer at the scene of the crime. Was on probation for Breaking and Entering. Pretty stupid to burglarize a cop's place, add to stupid by stealing a firearm.
