Florida girl looks to play the field as first in quarterback role for high school football team
When girls break down the high school football barrier and get on the field, it's usually to kick extra points. But when Erin DiMeglio gets in the game, she's calling signals.

The 17-year-old from Florida drew cheers when she went in to play quarterback in the fourth quarter of South Plantation High School's final pre-season game Friday, and if she takes a snap in the regular season, she'll make Sunshine State history.

"I couldn't take the smile off my face," DiMeglio told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "You'd think the other team would want to know why I'm there, but other players have been great. After the game, they shook my hand and said it was great I was playing football."

With her ponytail tucked inside her helmet, the 5-foot-6, 160-pound DiMeglio completed two passes against Seminole Ridge, calling the plays and staying safe in the pocket.

    It's over before it's started:

quote:DiMeglio has yet to get hit or make a tackle...
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

So she's Danica Patrick of high school footballer? Or more like obama where everyone is using kid gloves?

    Something funny about this deal.

Women cannot compete with men in sports. Don't you think if a 6-8 female was good enough, she would be starting for the Celtics?
For starters she would make the owner more money than Donald Trump makes.

Secondly federal law would force the NBA to let her play.
    If she was good enough.

So no femmes in the NBA or the NFL.
But they can't even compete in tennis or golf! They lack the upper body strength for golf, and they lack the running speed for tennis.

It is not popular to say it but women are different from men.

I played high school football at a big school in Atlanta in the sixties and there isn't a 17 year old female who would have lasted through a half hour of summer training on my team.

Yes I know there are successful female kickers. But not enough leg strength to make it in college or the pros.

So this is some weird little school that is hard up to put a girl at quarterback. I sincerely hope she doesn't get hurt.

She is third string and not likely to get much playing time.

Maybe she should take a time out and think about what will happen to her and the damage that will be carried on in child birth years. We had a gal that thought she could handle the 90lb jackhammer and tamper and it tore her up inside and the damage was done and for what.

Some of those players are BIG and bad and can hit like a truck

When I was in school Villa Grove had a girl that was a "lineman". She would play a few plays a game...ball always other side of the field[:I]

I never did get a chance to get in a pile with her, but we all wanted to, just to say we did this or that to her when we got the chance[:p]

Interesting to hear the lamenting that some guys never got the chance to hurt or sexually molest a clean cut high school girl who has commited the ultimate offense that she just wants to play a sport. As the father of two girls who were very active in sports in high school, all I can say is "Nice going guys." [xx(]

So why can females play male sports, but not the other way around?

Girls may not have the upper body strength of boys, but when they get down where they can use thier legs, the boys better watch out. Seen two or three girls take boys out by flipping them over thier shoulder and continue down field with the boy laying flat on his back. Girl in the 9th grade on our schools volley ball team was squatting more than any boy on the JV football team.
