We had 1 made from Heavy Equipment Wheels. Talk about a Coal Burner! You don't stand too close for very long. With a big Shop Fan behind it, our 40 by 80 foot shop stayed nice.

knew a guy who had an old potbelly stove in his shop. about end of september/October each year he would light a small pilot light in it. It was full of old scrap metal so much so I don't think you could have crammed another piece in. the pilot light was in the bottom of the stove, off an old gas range.

It would take about a month for all the scrap metal in it to get hot then look out. that little stove at times if he cranked the heat up would get red. but it kept his shop, probubly 24x24 warm all winter, and hardly any gas bill to speak of.
