Having an issue with a "Over head Door" brand garage door opener. Problem is it will close but not stay down, As soon as it closes the door opens back up. I have checked all the usual reasons for this and none is the problem. I had repair person out about 3 weeks ago when it first happened, he spent 5 min. adjusting the back of the unit and is seemed fixed, Has started again and hope to avoid another $65.00 service call. Any suggestions on fixing the problem. Is the issue with the "force down" adjustment?

really... the problem is there is too much force and the unit is limiting out, so adjust the back of the unit to lessen the travel.

would have to have the model number on the door closer.

If you had him out 3 weeks ago you should still be under a service warranty. Call the guy and tell him.

    Next.
Normally you can take the Name, Model number after going to their website and look at owners manual that normally conmes with the door unit and it will have trouble tips.

or next just do a bing/google search using the model number.

But if the expert adjusted the door and it operated OK for awhile, and then started doing the SAME thing again 3 weeks later you have a intermittent/erratic issue and if you or someone else dicks with the adjustments you are most likely not going to have a permanent fix and you have voided any and all previous service warranty.

You need to CONSIDER first calling the same guy again or have your wife whine at him, (Service guys don't like to hear women whiners)how do I know this? and will listen more carefully to a whining woman complaining about just throwing $65 out the window for nothing vs listening to a man complaining.

    Most likely the force adjustment
Where do you live? Cold/snow region? May be ice eve slightly raising your pad, thus have to adjust it several times during the winter season.

Are your eyes at the bottom of each rail in line with each other? They get bumped sometimes.

It appears you have too much electricity. Cut it back some. Don

After all the ones from lowes and problems... I just manually run mine. I can fix yours in a brief second. Just throw the breaker and pull the manual disconnect. It will stay down.

I had this same problem. I'd press the button, the door would go down, then it would go right back up. I'd have to press the button several times and hope it would eventually stay down.

I finally narrowed the problem down to the electric eyes. They sort of wear out over time and get less and less powerful, and the unit starts to malfunction. For whatever reason the problem seemed to be much worse in cold weather.

Sears Parts Direct--garage door opener is a Craftsman--wanted $60 for new eyes. After some hunting around I found them on Amazon for about $24. Installation was easy.

If the unit is old, this might be your solution. If service calls are a minimum of $65, might be worth a shot before making that call.

Guys thanks for the replies, the opener is probably 5-6 years old. I will try and adjust the closing force to see if this will help. It has been very cold here for the past few days, in the teens or lower, Don't know what if any effect this is having.

My opener would at times take a notion to go up when nobody had been in the garage for hours...My nephew works on T.V. Repair. And found three solder joint on the circuit board that were not soldered correctly.....twenty years later and still working fine...

Clean the wiring connections on both (left & right) of the photo/safety eyes at the bottom of the door.

Had the exact same problem and that fixed it.

That would be the first thing I would look at, too. Also, check the alignment of them. They may have gotten bumped out of line a bit. I've had spider webs cause minew not to work, also. There are a lot of spiders around here!

    Peace

As stated by several others, I would check the eyes first. I have experienced this a few times as I have 2 houses both with openers. Each time it has been electric eye related. Either dirt, dust or snow directly on the eye, or grass ,a leaf hanging or some debris hanging from the door bottom. Also the light color on the eye should verify the aim alignment. This should be the first check before committing to a service call.

I have a couple of openers that like to back up when they hit bottom in extremely cold (below zero) conditions. I think I need to adjust the track, where it goes from horizontal to vertical, but that's a warm weather job, when the problem doesn't appear. Catch -22.[;)]

very possible it is loose rails near the bottom of the track. When the door lowers it shakes the eye sensors and they lose contact with the receptor and it makes the door go back up.

It's either that or it's the down force, but you say you've checked that.

I recommend opening the door and checking the track for loose, particularly near the bottom. Sometimes those lag bolts work their way out. I had to put on a scab board to bolt them into since it was a repeat problem for me.

Oil your rollers and grease the tracks. Pull the emergency release and see if it's binding anywhere.

Mine will open by itself when there is a lot of moisture in the air.
