My new pet owl

Member Posts: 274 ✭✭✭
For the last two weeks or so I have been sitting in my den at the computer and about 10:30 PM or so, each night, an owl comes and sits in a tree outside my window and "talks" to me. If I talk back he'll sound off a bit more frequently. Animals and nature never cease to amaze and entertain. I feel blessed.-Mike

On the spiritual side, when an Owl visits you its suppose to mean misfortune, death or sorrow. In reality it means that the Owl is in danger from its natural habitat being destroyed.
Gee- I'm not feeling so blessed now. He's welcome to eat all the squirrels in my infested neighborhood and he has plenty of habitat surrounding the commons here. I really doubt he's in any trouble from a loss of habitat so I guess that means I'm in for some other democrat winning the next election.[8D]

I'll bet he's visiting your neighbor.
And you're the only one who will chat with him. [;)]
So... You are also a "Night Owl".[:D]

I love HOOTERS!!
ME TOO!!![:D]
I would feel blessed. Owls are specialized nocturnal predators, extremely well adapted for night hunting. They are not very bright however. They think if they close their eyes you can't see them. You have a roost where he feels secure and comfortable, so he is using it. Enjoy! What species is it anyway?
HeDog- I can't see him well enough to make out what species for sure. Best guess is grey owl. The sound he makes is a slow staccato who-hoot. -Mike

STOP!!!! You're Hooting Me!
She comes down from Yellow Mountain
On a dark, flat land she rides
On a pony she named Wildfire
With a whirlwind by her side
On a cold Nebraska night
Oh, they say she died one winter
When there came a killing frost
And the pony she named Wildfire
Busted down its stall
In a blizard he was lost
She ran calling Wildfire
She ran calling Wildfire
She ran calling Wildfire
By the dark of the moon - I planted
But there came an early snow
There's been a hoot-owl howling by my window now
For six nights in a row
She's coming for me I know
And on Wildfire we're both gonna go
We'll be riding Wildfire
We'll be riding Wildfire
We'll be riding Wildfire
On Wildfire we're gonna ride
Gonna leave sodbustin' behind
Get these hard times right on out of our minds
Riding Wildfire
owl..you have a lot of mice around
No fordsix- I am sure he is the bearer of bad news and misfortune. He kept sticking to the same "reply" when I asked him if he thought Michell might be our next president.[:0]-Mike
I envy you for your owl visitor. I live in a wooded area but haven't seen or heard an owl for many, many years. I don't understand why. I know they live in areas around my community, but none at my place despite trees and open areas with mice, squirrels, gophers, many other birds, etc. I miss owls.[:(]
We get a bit of everything here. Deer, turkey, ducks , geese. and a variety of varmints. I haven't seen coyotes or bobcats but they wouldn't be a surprise. I had a big red-tailed hawk that would sit on my deck earlier this year. Didn't seem real spooky either. The fascinating part of this is that we are about 2 miles from being out in the country. There are some substantial estates nearby so that explains the deer and turkeys.-Mike
I have a couple of big ones that visit the back yard regularly. Pine trees in the back are a great spot for them to watch for prey.
Here are the lyrics from MM Murphy's "Wild Fire"

Gray owl is European.[:p] If large likely a great horned, if smaller, barred owl is a good guess. Great horned the more likely hoo-hoo owl. They should have nested already, but may still have young in the area they are raising.
He dog, Greys are international and do get to Nebraska but not very often. I have rescued great horned owls so I am familiar with them. He just appears greyer than a barred owl. I got a decent look at him this morning but not long enough to get a picture. Captain fun's picture looks to be about the same size only his owl is the "smart" species.(wintering in FLA)[:D]Thanks all, Mike
