Gas peddle sticking.....not a fun surprise!

The weather is finally nice enough to drag the Camaro out. Last weekend I drove it down to my mother's house. Her grass was getting high, so me and my brother wend over to mow. Her yard is small, but has a good size hill on the back side. My brother was running the weedeater while I push mowed the yard......OMG....that is the first time in 20 or more years that I have done that! I don't even mow my own yard....so, I had forgotten just how horrible this is.

Anyway.....on the way up there I stop in at Jacks to get some coffee for the road. I get the coffee and when I pull out into traffic.....the gas peddle pulls itself down further than I pressed it!!! I wasn't just "pulling out" but I was peeling out!!!!! I looked like a total A-hole for everyone there.

It did it two more times on the way home. So, thats new! Every time the Camaro is parked for a decent amount of time something happens. The headlights won't work....it needs trans fluid....something.....it never fails. The peddle thing is a new one on me!

    This is what can happen:

Get it towed, or fixed where it sits.

Thats a early Camaro, ain't it???

If so check this out.... You probably have a broken driver side motor mount. You can check it by reving the engine and watching if the motor
lifts or tries to shift to the passenger side.
That causes the carb linkage to pull open and stick.

Chevy recalled lots of cars and installed cable restraints to hold the motor down!! My dad's 327 impala had them.
See this ebay add for them.[xx(]

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/6270739-1965-1969-Chevy-V8-283-327-Motor-Mount-Factory-Recall-Stop-Lift-Anchor-/181691309992?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a4da55fa8&vxp=mtr

Again IF it's an early chevy.... always install the new designed anti-lift mounts like these from any auto parts store.
Note the T shaped steel piece {right side of mount} that interlocks with the base to stop the lift.

That would be my first check.

Also, if it has an aftermarket cruise control the servo? may be bad.
My Wagoneer had, key word there Had, an aftermarket CC and started that crap. Set the cruise for 60-65, next thing I knew I'm running 75-80. Cut all that garbage off and went back to the calibrated foot.[^]

    cruise control malfunction??
My Chevy pickups get a "catch in the pedal" occasionally. It usually happens after shut off and restart or after sitting for a while. Seems to be related to carbon building up on or around the throttle position control. It is noticeable as it requires considerable more force on the pedal and then when it goes-IT GOES. Makes for exciting garage exits. Most often, running an injector cleaning product solves the problem or reduces the occurrence.

    Good thought!
After checking the floor matts, check this!
Hell, check them both! NOW! Before driving it 2 feet.

This is what the oem's look like.. Once the rubber breaks, NOTHING
holds the motor down except it's weight.[xx(]

Jimmy is out there looking at it now. Neither of us had ever heard of the motor mount thing. Jimmy came back in and said....."you need to come smell your car, something has died in it." He thought it was funny because there are a couple shovels in it. (From where I went and did yard work at my mothers.)

    No floor mat.

One of you get in the car.. Start it up, put it in gear with foot on brake and rev it up a little. If mount is broken on Drivers side.. engine will raise up on that side. It will also show signs on the bottom of the hood where the air breather hit the paint or insulation.

if the motor is raising enough for the air breather to hit the hood the fan should also be hitting the fan shroud, if it still has one, and the original fan, not flex fan, this you should be able to hear....

My Old AMC Ambassador did that once. I was making a left and goosed it to get around quick. pedal dropped out from under my foot and went to the floor.

This was on Camp Pendelton, hit about 80 before I decided I had better shut it off. By the time the MP's caught up to me I had the hood up and was ripping the cruise control out.

You never got the letter back in 1971 ???[;)]

    Here....

    http://www.autosafety.org/chevrolet-motor-mounts

...at the end of that.... Chevrolet spent $1.oo per car to put the cables on, cost of new style mounts would have been $50.00 per car.

YOU THE MAN!!!, BEAN COUNTERS!!!! [xx(]

Jimmy found some cables that were resting on the rod to the accelerator. He got some zip ties to move them out of the way....but that might not be the problem because he drove off just a sec ago and it seemed that he jolted out of the driveway a little.

I think it is mechanical linkage, so when engine torques to one side it will pull more throttle. I have a few of the torque cables around somewhere for 60s Chevys, if interested, no charge, Locust Fork. If I remember right they bolt to the exhaust manifold then wrap around the upper A frame shaft...so lengths may very. Somebody may remember better or look into an old Motor Manual.

If it has mechanical linkage, lube it thoroughly. I had that trouble on a '74 vehicle that had sat for months. If the linkage is sticking, the accelerator will just stay where you leave it. Kind of a poor man's cruise control.

The other option quite popular in the day was chain links or now solid motor mounts, but transfers engine vibration to the rest of the car.

Jimmy drove it to take some packages of ours to the post office. He had to drop off something that the owner of a local car dealer won while he was out. It was pretty funny. He said the entrance was blocked by someone....so he just pulled it off into the grass next to the other cars. He didn't make it into the building before they were getting calls about it. He heard the receptionist yell out "Do we have a yellow convertible for sale???" Too funny!!!

He said he didn't have any more issues with the peddle. I'm still very leery of it....so, I'm going to be pretty careful about who I let drive it until I'm sure it isn't going to happen again. Jimmy said it needs a new return spring sometime soon....just because the one that is on there is looking pretty rough. I would hate to press the gas and it not let off when you stop pressing the peddle. The "gunning it" ordeal is scary enough!!!! I'm not even kidding about the fact that it pulls itself down harder....it sure does wake you up when it happens!

Back in the 60s I was taking off fast and I had a motor mount to break on my '64 Comet. It threw the carburetor linkage wide open. Luckily I was the only one on the road and nothing happened. I reached down and turned off the ignition and came to a stop. I knew what it was right away and started it back up and took it easy back home.

You can open the hood and sit in the car with the brake on in gear and rev the engine a little and see the engine start to raise up if it's a broke motor mount.
