So like I mentioned earlier, I recently went on a Texas hog hunt.

The hunt was supposed to take place in March, but weather (damn global warming) got the best of us and we had to reschedule.

Anyway, long story short, got me a hog, a nice fat 85 pounder.

Gun: Husqvarna Swedish Mauser vintage 1942, after mark sporterized, nice light and short, dead on accurate with iron sights.

Load: 129 grain Hornady SST, backed by 2.8cc IMR 4064. The gun and bullet performed admirably, with perfect expansion and energy dump, creating damage and shock far out of proportion to its modest size.

    Highly recommended.

From some of the posts I've seen, seems a half inch browning is the best thing to bring. But my research leads me to believe thats a little pricey to shoot.

    Whats prefered?

look on youtube. people are using everything from 223 to 308 45-70. Seems most prefer a semi auto though.

Generally speaking, anything that will kill a deer will do for hogs. Specific selection probably depends more on where you are hunting them (swamp, plains, woods) than caliber.

So I've been thinking about the .223 option. But I'm trying to convince myself that I'll need to buy a .308 to do the job right.

For the bigger ones the .308 is much better

I would support the .308 option over the .223 (if that helps you convince yourself). If you can shoot them broadside and hit them in the ear every time, the .223 would do it... and I've used a 220 Swift and a 22-250, but only when I was actually after coyotes. But I don't go out with a 22 caliber if I'm hunting hogs.

I usually just buy her a couple of drinks and tell her she's pretty.

ill support the 308 option if it helps you decide[:D]. Can double as a deer gun that way too.

They aren't too tough, if you shoot through the lungs.

I have killed over a dozen of them. I have used a .45acp with military hardball ammo [legal in Georgia,] I have shot five of them with a .50 patched round ball in my TC Hawken, and the rest with my 30-06.

    None larger than 185 pounds.
None of them made fifty yards after getting hit.

Damn, what good eating! Better than venison any day of the week, and I love venison.

Sound like you've hunted in some of the same bars that I have.[:D][8D]
