Top 9 worst investments

edited January 2012 in General Discussion
According to a Wall Street report, these are the Top 9 worst investments currently on the market. The depreciation rate of these "collectibles" is 80-90% due to over-supply, over-pricing and low demand. In their words, if you are counting on these to fund your retirement, you'll still be serving lattes at Starbucks when you're 90!

In no particular order:

Hummel figurines
Precious Moments figurines
Beanie Babies
Norman Rockwell plates
Thomas Kinkade paintings
Franklin Mint collectibles
Hess toy trucks
Lladro statues
Cabbage Patch kids

Their list showing best investments would be more interesting.

Traditionally, firearms and jewelry/precious metals are tops.

The article said Kinkade QVC'd them to death and the market is flooded with his paintings. The goods new is that it was a great investment for him, making him $53 million richer! [:0]

Sure glad prewar Winchesters and Colts aren't on that list; I'd be crying right about now even though I don't consider them retirement investments! [:0]

Why oh why did I invest in those Beanie baby collectible plates that were painted by Norman Rockwell and sold by the Franklin mint?

if you drink it, its not an investment. its a purchase.

you can do ok on collectible wine. not great, but ok. the problem is you have to store it properly, which either means building a climate controlled cellar or paying a professional storage company both of which take a big chunk out of your profit.

you also of course need to know what you're doing. millions stacked upon millions of gallons of wine are produced every year. that vast majority of it is never going to be worth anything more than it is today. dumping your money in table wine is a great way to lose money.

Not many of the commemorative guns ever do well either. Many of those in the '94 versions can be bought pretty much as shooters.

I'm good, I have none of the above.
My retirement is in the market, with me directing the investments. I have 18% per year since inception growth on one of my plans with ~3% so far this year in 2012.
My other investments I enjoy the most are commodities like wood, brass, steel, lead and energetic materials
