I feel for ya grumpy. I have always done oil changes and minor up-keep on my vehicles, but the major stuff I take to a good friend who works on cars.

However, when I bought my Monte Carlo, the dealership was running an incentive of free oil changes for 3 years. The first time I take it in the mechanic says, "Oh man do I love these Monte Carlo SS's. They are nice cars and that super-charged V6 runs nice!" I looked at him and asked if he was 100% sure on the amount of oil and filter that went into the car, considering it was a 5.3L non-supercharged V8 in there. He turned red and got nervous as heck and tried telling me they didn't put that engine in the Monte Carlo. That one is only in their pick-ups.

I wasn't mad that he had guessed what was in it for an engine or anything, just ticked that he seemed to "know" what it had for an engine and was clearly going to put the amount of oil and filter that he "knew" it took. He wouldn't admit he was wrong either. I told that maintenance supervisor, "he touches my car, I won't be back ever again."

My jeep has a 5.7 hemi in it, most ridiculous thing ever to change oil on, there is a valvoline oil and lube local, I just use them, you pull in, don't exit your vehicle and they are done in minutes, I dont have a mess to clean up, I dont have to keep a grease gun mess going ether

I changed a air filter about a week before my wife went to a Oil can Henry's with a coupon, my wife calls me and says the "Mechanic" wants a additional 23.00 for a new air filter (a (9.00 item) I asked to speak to the "Mechanic" he also tries to tell me that the air filter is dirty and should be changed, I explain that I still have the box and receipt, are you claiming the auto parts store sold me a used air filter?
He handed the phone back to my wife never said another word to other to say the oil change was on the house.

When she got home I made sure the dipstick was still there and the new oil filter was secure and ended up changing the oil myself to be on the safe side.

One place told me my K&N needed Replaced. Told them to put it back in and read the Sticker on the Air Box. It talks about How to clean it.

Me: Why is there a $20 charge for an extra qt? Is that correct?

Them: Yes Sir, that is correct. Your car holds 6.2 quarts and we have to charge the full qt price because once we opened the bottle and we can't use it on another vehicle.

Me: I have been here every year for the past 6 years, you have never charged me for 6.2 quarts.

Them: Oh yes, I am quite sure we have. Maybe you just don't remember?

Me: Goes to car, gets out the "Book" of every single transaction ever related to said car, pulls last 6 receipts and ask him to show me.

Them: studder, errr studder well I can't see that they did. However we put the 6.2 quarts in per mfg specs.

Me: So you are saying you have been charging me full price for 6 years and not giving me what I was paying for?

Them: Uhh. oh no. No sir, I am sure your car was properly filled, I just don't know why you were not charged.

Me: OK. I don't have to come back to this place, just go get my .8 quarts you didn't use and I will take it with me.

    Them: oh, uh what?

Me: My .8 quarts. You said you opened a quart bottle to top the car off and you want to charge me $20 for a quart of oil I can buy anywhere for $7. I want the rest of my oil. To make sure I am getting what I paid for.

Them: oh, well we use oil in barrels. We pump it out with the oil guns. I...

Me: Wait! You mean you lied to me?

Them: Well uh oh I err, no. We had to put 6.2 quarts in your car...

Me: I get that! But YOU just said you opened a bottle and you cant use it on another vehicle. I want my oil.

    Them: but...

Me: Son you better get your poop straight right quick, because I am fixing to open a can of whoop * on someone.

Them: yes sir, I understand. i am new and I dont know what to do, i was just told we had to add extra for the oil over 6 quarts.

Me: I tell you what to do, go get my oil or take it off the ticket and you better get on it.

Them: ok, I need the managers key...

Me: hell no, you don't need a damn key, make it work.

Them: OK, ok I can just charge you the $121.33 and let them fix it later.

Me: Sounds better. When I get home I am going to dispute the charge, so don't spend a whole lot of time waiting for it to deposit.

    Them: yes sir.

F*** Mobile 1. I sent them an email and the reply was "we have no control over the franchise pricing or business practice. You will need to take it up with them.

I called and left a message for a manager or the owner and it's been over a year and half and I have NEVER heard from either. They didn't challenge the disputed charge. I know go to the chevy house where it is $100 even for inspection and oil change and it's right here in town.

sorry took so long, but you pushed one of my buttons.

I worked for a couple Cad dealers as a tech for 38 years. The stories I have are innumerable. Anything is possible. If at all possible do these oil changes yourself and skip the potencial chaos! Most of these lube guys just stepped up from a job at Micky Dee's anyhoo. [:)]

I was having some health issues, the automatic transmission went out in the wifes Jeep. She took to the dealership and had a rebuild put in. She gets it home and I check the fluid, three quarts low.

I can only recall one time in the last six trips to the dealership to have something fixed, that I didn't have to fix it again myself within a few weeks. I made some mistakes when I was younger and learning, but these guys could screw up a wet dream. They are all German schooled, certified and borderline incompetent.

I remember many times pulling into a full service gas station with my VW bug ad having the guy walk around to the front to check the oil.[:D]

I haven't allowed anyone to change oil in my vehicles since 1977. I traded for a new pickup and the dealer threw in 3 oil changes. I've seen more problems related to incorrect plug/filter installation than from just not changing motor oil at all.

I took a '95 Pontiac Transport in for an oil change in early '06 to a local garage/service station where I get inspections.

I bought 6qt of oil and Fram Tough Guard filter($35 total) for the vehicle and told the manager and mechanic to use these and return the empties and old filter.

It was late winter/early spring and I had nowhere to do it myself at the time.
After the job, I get home 3 blocks away and realise I didn't get the bag of empty bottles and old filter.
I went back outside and popped the hood, looked down the side of the block and see this tiny white pancake of a filter NOT my grey Fram filter.
I reached down to the filter and it fell into my hand, never made contact w/the threads. I don't know how to this day how I got home in that condition.
Fortunately I had a spare Fram in the apartment and got that changed out.

I went back after this to the station, manager and most of the mechanics had gone home, to later find out the 'new' mechanic who serviced my vehicle had thrown out my oil and filter thinking they were used/old, after I just told them.

I still go back for inspections but nothing else anymaore.

Not wild about driving my truck up on the ramps and getting under a several ton hunk of metal to get splashed with hot oil...

After cussing the GM engineer that put the oil filter right above the crossbar...

It is satisfing to know you got it right when its said and done!
