ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (WAVE) - A man wielding a knife was shot and wounded by a Kentucky State Police trooper late Sunday night in Elizabethtown, according to a KSP news release.
Troopers responded to the 2000 block of Hodgenville Road just before midnight Sunday after family members of Gerald R. Scheppa, 53, called state police requesting a welfare check because Scheppa had made suicidal references, the news release states.
When the troopers arrived at the address, according to KSP, Scheppa was brandishing a large knife and immediately ran into a wooded area bordering his home. After Scheppa was located in the woods, the troopers said he became belligerent and threatening, and then threw the knife at Trooper Charlie Miller who simultaneously fired one shot from his service weapon. Scheppa was hit by the bullet and taken into custody. He was transported by ambulance to Hardin Memorial Hospital and was taken later to University of Louisville Hospital for surgery.
Scheppa is charged with 3rd degree assault.
