It's being willing. I found out early that most men, regardless of cause or need, aren't willing. They blink an eye or draw a breath before they pull the trigger. I won't. ~ J.B. Books

    More like impossible, unless...[;)]

Elvis made PFC while in basic. To which an Army spokesman responded that it was not uncommon for a recruit to receive such a promotion when his performance was exceptional. [:D][:D][:D][:D] and[xx(], to that.

Staff Sergeant was E-5 back then. Still not too shabby, but not impossible. PFC was E-2 when Elvis went through basic. When I went through boot camp everybody was advanced to E-2 when they finished boot. We had a couple of guys who joined as E-3. One was an ROTC dropout and the other one had former Army service.

I had a First Sergeant in the Corps that went from E-3 to E-5 in 24 hours. He was guarding a submarine base. Got promoted to Corporal (E-4) in the Morning. That night on duty he caught a spy. Got meritoriously promoted to Sergeant (E-5) the next morning.

Looking at wiki - it's possible he enlisted as having some college or a college graduate. Not very clear.

,,,,,,,there was once a 'feller' who went from 'slick sleeve' to E-5 one week out of 'basic',,,,,,Gen. Autery J. Maroun made that happen while inspecting the troops at Ft. Carson.(Colorado Spgs., Colorado),,,,,BTW, he was riding a white 'Stud Horse' on the Parade Grounds,,,,,,,,,,,
There must be an interesting story behind that.
