Hi guys, I am PCSing (being reassigned by the Army) to Ft Jackson Sc (that's in Columbia Sc for those that don't know) I am looking for a house to rent up there, I have been up a couple times but no payoff. I need a 3 br 2 bath house not apt. Needs to be in a good neighborhood and perferably close to the base for driving reasons (gas). Anyone live up there or know of any listings? My wife has burned up the internet looking and the long distance bill is gonna be sky high. Any help would be appreciated. Thx

I was out the other night around 2:30 A.M. and heard five quick shots, a pause of a second or two and two more shots. Wasn't my problem, it wasn't my hunting lease, I didn't go and investigate. I called the guy who owns that lease and asked if he had anybody out pig hunting, he said no.

It sounded like a .243. wasn't a .223 or a .308, of course sound can fool you in the woods. The thing is there really aren't that many hunters around that use a semi auto rifle (around here), especially one with an extended magazine.

What rifle could it have been? Defiantly a high velocity round, you can tell from the crack.

Mostly just curiosity, but he was shooting in the lease next to mine. Likely a poacher, who has an odd (for around here) rifle.

    SKS?

Could be, likely even, they aren't hard to get across the border. I'll ask the gun shops if they have sold any ammo for one.

AR 15's are scarce around here, not likely, but most anything is possible.

I've kind of got brain lock, I'm not coming up with many likely answers. I think I would have recognized a a 91 or any of the other more common auto loaders. Could have been a .308 he was kind of shooting my direction, I haven't heard many .308 rounds coming my way, mostly they are going another direction.

well, with the information you've given us it could have been:

every magazine fed semi automatic centerfire intermediate caliber rifle ever made.

if you can provide more information, perhaps that list can be narrowed down, but with the data provided thats about as close as we're going to get.

Most of the auto loaders over here are limited to a five round mag for hunting, used to be a two round plug in a five round mag but nobody enforces it.

It wasn't an AK I would have recognized that sound, unlikely to be a AR for many reasons, mostly because they are very pricey here and poaching is a major felony. You loose the rifle, pay a hefty fine and loose your weapons registration card. If somebody is going to poach, in all likelihood they abandon the rifle and take off running.

Your right, there are many possibilities, but actually few probabilities. They only chance I have of catching the guy is to see his car, ask the gun shops who bought what ammo or catch him in the act.

Besides the fact he was within 150 yards of many houses and maybe a hundred yards from a school. And shooting my direction, but a little from my right to my left and fired 7 rounds in less than 10 seconds. He couldn't have been doing much aiming or much thinking about where his bullets were likely to go.

Well anyway, thanx for the ideas, I needed a few. Maybe somebody with a new toy they just had to try out and picked a poor place to do it.

I don't think I could distinguish between a 223, 243 and 308 when fired off in the distance.

You get pretty good at it after awhile. We go out hunting and have maybe 3-4 guys sitting in different high seats. We usually go after a certain Deer. If the Boar show up anything goes. I have listened to hundreds if not thousands of shots from nearby high seats, I can usually tell who is shooting from the sound of the shot. Things get a little more difficult in the woods, we usually hunt open fields or hedge rows. Too many people here in the woods, picking mushrooms, nature walks, jogging, mountain biking or getting a leg over.

The only open areas where this guy was shooting was a fire road, the rest was forest. Shooting up a fire road at night (no moon) is a good way to kill somebody, you never can tell when somebody is out walking the dog.

As a matter of fact, he was likely shooting at a Doe and/or fawn, where the shots came from is where a Doe hangs out, I've seen her many times.
