Low velocity Tannerite

Saw some of the above at the latgest gunshow that a .22 rimfire will set off.

Does anyone know the formula?? I have got to make some!!

I have been making the regular Tannerite type targets for ages but would like to use something that a regular hand gun will set off.

If you have a formula and don't want to post it here, just drop me a PM. Will be much appreciated. Tom

What you seek isn't really a true form of Tannerite.

I'm drawing a blank right now what it's called. It's the same thing primers, cap gun strips, ect. are made with IIRC.

Go to youtube and type in homemade tannerite. In the right margin will be links for what you want.

If I remember how to make & name I'll edit.

    EDIT:

    Flash powder!

    Aluminum(30%), potassium perchlorate (70%)

Yes makes me nervous to mix. I use the Tannerite "Goliath" ones.

    Very loud for small amount.

    Txs, you have mail.

Nutfin, fordsix, you guys have it backwards. The low velocity, IE regular tannerite, is VERY stable. Unless you are talking about low velocity bullets setting it off. This is called the high velocity targets, which are 3 times the power of the regular tannerite. Hope that is not confusing.
That is the formula I am looking for. I want the low velocity initiated with the high velocity "bang".

When you roll your own targets, you can make 50lbs for less than 50 bucks. Lots of bang for your buck.

Tempest, what is the tannerite "Goliath"? Do you make yours from scratch or use the store bought pre mix? Best, Tom

reg tannerite type targets need hivel rifle(223 heard 17 rim will go) to set off there is a rimfire mix on the market that will go with hand gun or rimfire (22) the mix in that is sensitive when mixed to sparks, flame, visco wick.static electricity..i know the formulas for all these targets i will not tell you so don;t ask i do not want to be the one that helped vaporize your self..i know the folks that make this stuff..tccox i have it right[;)]if tannerite type mix is lowvel why will it not go off with a rimfire??? be carefull..are you talking lowvel shoot to hivel pressure bang/

Low velocity tannerite is an unstable bomb! Tannerite is basically just Fertilizer (nitrogen) and powdered aluminum. I cannot see why anyone would want the same effect with basically a pellut gun.

Here is the link to the Tannerite web sight...

    http://www.tannerite.com/shop/category/exploding-rifle-targets/

It looks like they have a couple types of targets for the 22's. Both seem to be binary targets.

The fertilizer and aluminum oxide powder are the basis for the Tannerite, but it is not the Nitrogen that makes the explosion, as Nitrogen is inert, non flammable(it can actually be used to put out a fire, because it suffocates it from the oxygen), and non-explosive. The fertilizer used is ammonium nitrate, and the active ingredient for the Tannerite would be the oxygen from the ate in the nitrate, the Hydrogen from the ammonia(ammonia is 75% Hydrogen), and the oxygen from the aluminum oxide. So between the impact of the bullet, and the aluminum seperating the hydrogen out of the ammonia, and the free oxygen molecules, it creates spontaneous combustion.

The Tannerite site says the 22 targets are different from the original Tannerite.

For those who like the full sized targets for the bigger boom, there is also another company out there making these targets. It is called Shock Wave, and you can get a case of 20 ONE POUND targets for around $100.00, where as the tannerite is about the same for a case of 20 1/2 POUNDER's. Shockwave also makes 4 pound targets. Here is their link...

"Goliath" is Tannertite brand. Here is my son shooting them at 100 yards. At 100 yards, a 40g .22 is going less than 1,000 FPS and sets them off no problem.
