Winchster Carbine

My son is wanting a 38-55 Winchester Octagon barrel Carbine. The only one I know of in a modern gun is the trails end. These guys burn up a lot of ammo and he is convinced a older model Winchester, because of the use from the past would not hold up to the amount of use he would put it through. I don't know if they even made a Octagon barrel carbine other than the trails end.
Personally given how much ammo some of the cowboy shooters that I know put through a gun I think if he could find one in good shape it would be damn hard to shoot it enough that it would become dangerous.
The only carbines I have seen, Winchester, are round barrels but It seems to me you could special order about any thing you wanted. Is there another Octagon barrel carbine in a 38 55 that you guys know of?

Then he is searching for a needle..........Winchester did not do special orders on trails end stuff. An original in good shootin condition will be a small fortune. ?berti guns are basically Winchesters modified to play today's games. I don't know if they make one in 38-55 or with a octagon carbine barrel but that's where I'd start.

Another option would be to find a 30wcf with a octagon barrel and have the barrel reamed, rifled and re-chambered to 38-55.

There is a guy in OR who will do it at a reasonable price and he sells on here too.

There are a lot of commemorative M94 rifles that came with octagon barrels too.

For a octagon in 30wcf the Canadian Centennial and the Buffalo Bill both had octagon barrels and were in 30wcf which could be converted to 38-55 real easy. You would just have to get it re-bored and re-chambered which would cost less than $400.

Here is guy that will do the work and he answers some FAQ:

Yup, it's called "The Cowboy" model. I like them as much as the Winchester. Like stated above, a small fortune for a Winchester, if he can find a good one.

In the strictest sense, there are NO vintage 1894 Winchester octagon barrel carbines. To Winchester, a carbine had a round barrel and a barrel band.

He could buy an original 38-55 octagon rifle, in a selection of barrel lengths depending on his wallet. 26" was standard.

He could watch for an original with an already cut down barrel. This would have very little collector rifle. With proper loads he would never wear out an 1894.

There are commemorative guns that are carbine octagon barrel guns but most are 30 30. I have seen several 66 Centennial carbines out there but there again it is a 30 30.
I was just thinking maybe Winchester might have made a run of Octagon barrel carbines some one time or other.
I see a NIB trails end Hunter every now and then but I could not imagine taking a NIB hunter just to blast away at crap when they cost as much as they do.

Winchester did not ever make a pre-64 Model 94 Carbine with an octagon barrel. If someone wanted an octagon barrel that was shorter than standard (26-inches), a "Short Rifle" could be special ordered. There are a fair number of original Model 1894 Short Rifles out there, but the majority of them were made in 30 WCF.

In the model 94 commemoratives, the 1980 Oliver F. Winchester is the closest (38-55, 24" octagon barrel), kind of fancy with some gold plating but not overly spendy as they made about 20,000 of them.
