edited January 2012 in General Discussion
My bathtub has a crack aroud the drain, It is about 8 inchd long and if you push down on the drain is about a 1/2 inch gap. Is ther anyway to seal this and keep it from leaking or do I need to look for a new tub?

A corvette repair kit. I would think epoxy would take care of it for a while. Watch the ceiling below it for stains and leaks.

No ceiling below, It is in a mobile home that we will be selling in May or June when we get our house built. Don't really want to spend the money on a new one but I am sure the buyers will ding us for the replacment of the tub plus the sub floor.

Make it a walk-in shower and tile it.[^]

replace the tub, no way to sleep well unless the possibility of a leak and the hidden rot is prevented. Put the new tub into a base of mortar to prevent flexing and future problems.

Replace the tub for no epoxy fix will repair it to hold if it is flexing enough to show a 1/2" gap. Also if it has been cracked for some time I would want to know the condition of the sub floor.

And installing a new will allow for you to do it right and sit it on a solid base of cement.

Time for a new tub. A real repair will be as much work and expense as a new tub.

+1 Install a new tub and fix any damage from the leak first.
You'll get more for the mobile if U do.quote:Originally posted by edgecam

Actualy it would be easy to repair if you remove the tub and turn it upside down. Fiber glass cloth and resin from the back side. Bevel the edges of the break and lay down mutiple layers of glass cloth and resin. Just repaired a fiberglass kids battery powered car from 1955 this way. Thing is it would be quicker and easier to replace the tub after you have it out.

You could try to fix it best you can with resin.

Then you can paint the whole stall or tub with the epoxy paint they have at home improvement stores.

We used the paint to cover pink tiles and paint an old cast iron tube when we bought our house. They look like new.

Few things about the epoxy paint, it stinks like hell & make sure you use the correct roller nap. The wife used a roller that was just a little course than I thought she should have.(almost texture in places she used that roller)

If you can get at it use fiberglass cloth and resin. If you can take the unit out you can repair it even easier.
Sand it lightly around the bottom of the drain with rough paper and blow it dry and blow the dust off with a hairdrier and then mix the epoxy and paint the cloth with resin and form it around the drain from underneath. Put about 4 applications around the drain and then paint it all again with the mixed resin and let it dry for at least 24 hrs water free and do NOT step in the tub in those 24 hrs either. Make sure you reinforce the drain area with some treated wood and you can cut it and resin it right to the tub if you wish.

I'll point out the key word in "Could be repaired".

"Could is not an absolute. Depending on whether the tub was manufactured using epoxy or vinylester resin and whether or not you get lucky and guess at a match. Proper bond will be iffy, so Could becomes Maybe, Maybe not.

If you repair it from the top it will crack again, as the cause of the movement has not been addressed. If you must have a tub, get a better quality one, not plastic, and support it to the manufacturers instructions.
