Not sure if you're alone maybe just into a different style of weaponry. Personally, I like synthetic stocks, much lighter than wood.

It's iffy. I like wood stocks on bolt actions, black on black guns, wood and blue on a revolver, synthetic stock and stainless steel barrel on a lever action... Everybody likes certain guns that look certain ways.

Nope, I'd end up with a terminal case of splinters and missing a few digits... :) but I can use google image search.

Top one is a Belgian G series metric FN-FAL. The L1A1 (Canadian, Brit, Aussie) typically has all wood, looks nice, just like the metrics ergonomics better.

Ironwood Designs sells the AR stuff, they have the FAL stuff too, and better stuff for the AK. That particular set was for sale on the falfiles forums, just lifted the pic.

I'm trying to find someone local to me with a wood work shop (need band saw and a router and know how to use 'em) so I can make my own handguards for a FAL. There is a really good howto on the falfiles - http://www.falfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=2993813

I'd like to build an A1 with wood furniture like that, that would be cool.

Never ownened a black gun and never will. Iam with you. I like my guns with wood and blued steel. There is nothing like an old winchester lever action or a really nice 700 BDL to get me excited. My son is into the black guns so I think it is more of the younger generation.

    that is one SSWWEEEETTT FAL!!!

the L1A1 used by the UK was issued w/wood, but in the late 60's they switched to black plastic called ""Maranyl".

If you look at pics or vids of the Falklands War, you will see the UK troops carrying L1A1's with the black furniture.

ARs are great! simple design, parts are plentiful, don't need to be a gunsmith to work on one or assemble one. You can do so much with them. Like a Glock, they ain't pretty but they are utilitarian.

But a Browning Safari is quite pretty! Would like to own a few of them.

Different guns for different applications. It is as simple as that.

I have blue and wood on bolts, levers and one semi-auto.

My AR is my "Zombie" gun. It has one purpose and it is NOT to look pretty.

I don't like black guns but I just bought one for the range. I also hate synthetic stocks.

i used to hate them with a passion, along with glocks, then i spent enough time on the range and seen for myself what they can actually do, looking at a schematic of an ar looks overwhelming, but once you study it and learn it is relatively easy to understand, i am a stainless and rose wood guy for the most but i came to my senses and know that looks are not necessary in a utility

i didnt like the look of ether, but after the experiences i have had with them, they are a thing of beauty

oh! plus the fact you never needs a gunsmith, just a parts changer is necessery on both

I am partial to wood. I have many times inspected synthetic stocked rifles and have yet to bring one home with me...

As long as they look good. Who cares.
The wood stock gives more options for customizing.

I don't dislike any type of gun. I may not be "into" a particular type of gun but I have no argument with those who are.

I like about all types of guns. AR's are ok, i just don't favor them in my collection. Wood doesn't do it all for me. I'm not saying a good wood isn't pretty, but my guns work, and pretty wood doesn't make them shoot better and certainly doesn't take well to the nasty brush of NE Iowa.

In general I prefer wood. I DO like the look of a well made black synthetic stock with stainless, and I use a synthetic stock shotgun for hunting as the wood was getting rather banged up dragging it around in the field. So I'm not against black guns, I just don't really get turned on by them.

I do dislike the AR. I think it is a very accurate rifle, but I'm just not partial to modular construction and I still think that it is unreliable. About a dozen times a year I see guys at the range with a jammed AR. I have yet to see a jammed M1 or M1A. Every AR I have fired (including a Colt, Bushmaster, and DPMS) has, within 100 rounds, jammed at least once; I was using quality handloads provided by the owner who said, "Gee, that's never happened to ME before..." I think that the AR realizes I don't like it and so it doesn't cooperate.

I also dislike the spring in the buttstock going 'poing' every time I shoot. Very distracting.

Finally I think they're overpriced. I'm not talking about some high end match gun that has had a lot of work, just a basic plain jane AR shouldn't push a grand. The ones I see under that price invariably are tacticool jobs with collapsible stocks that remind me of a wiffle bat, carbine barrels, and enough crap mounted on top to spot a satellite in orbit (invariably a cheap red dot is there, also a cheap bipod, etc.)

I MIGHT consider a wood stock AR or black and stainless one if I were satisfied that it was reliable and the price was right.

Nothing against them, the first centerfire rifle I ever shot was an old (new at the time-1978) Colt AR15, without the foward assist feature.
Sold it in 1979 and never looked back. [;)]
